Some images are all about the processing, where the heart of the frame is brought out and the style of the photographer is really on show. This is one of those images. I'm a big fan of this kind of hi-key editing because it can really bring an image to life. Without this hi-key treatment I fear that the scene would have been a little muddy and the main elements lost to the background, but by excluding it ensures all our attention is focussed on the main content of the frame filled up by the two gnarly trees.
I like how you've composed the image with the two trees flanking the hut in the distance, their bare branchings reaching out into the white nothingness. I like that you've kept in the pathway to lead the eye into the scene and the detail of the sheep really adds both context and scale.
An image that is full of interest and personality, benefitting from the monochrome conversion and your processing style. Worthy of a top 3 position. Thanks for sharing.
Congratulations on placing 1st. It was a tough choose with plenty of potential winners but in the end your image just about edged out the rest of the competition.
What I really enjoyed about this is the time and thought that has gone into not only the composition but also the exposure. It's hard to get exposures of this length right, but when you do, the results are excellent. I like the smoothness in the water that contrasts with the jagged rocks jutting out, creating contrast.
The overcast weather really helps to even out the tones with the mood in the sky reflected in the water below. I often say that there is nowhere to hide with monochrome conversions, but this is one of those images where I can only imagine that the colour version would be distracting and it suits black and white. Your composition is spot on, with the rocks zig zagging through the frame, leading the eye from one part of the image to another. I like how you've given some room for the rocks to breathe on the right hand side of the frame.
A well seen, captured and processed image. Well done!

**This contest is open to photographers ranked between 251 and 1000 in this week’s Leaderboard.** This is landscape photography stripped back to tone and form. Some of us need a reminder not to forget black and white photography, now that we shoot everything digitally in colour. How does your vibrant landscape respond to the desaturated treatment - what is improved, and what is lost? Landscape photography covers many types of location, but here we’ll focus more on natural, non-urban scenes, which may include some evidence of human habitation and activity.
