This is such a beautiful and poignant photograph. The seemingly deep connection they have for each other is shown in the closeness to each other, the stares into each others eyes is so warm and tender that you cant help but think this is something special. The seem utterly unaware of the camera which is not an easy thing to do in a market where everybody is looking around. The use of black and white fits in with the documentary tradition and also the older ages of the people in the frame, It accentuates the flat cap and head scarf and those details in the jackets are lovely and crisp. The simple tight framing is aided by the blank cloth behind them and this frames the couple perfectly. This is a wonderfully observed private moment captured with expert clarity by the photographer. Stunning.

**This contest is open to photographers ranked between 1 and 250 in this week’s Leaderboard.** Stripped of colour, portraiture can have an added intensity, a focus on shape, the look in the eyes, the textures of the skin, with fewer things to distract us from the essence of the person. Subtle toning in one colour is permitted, and we’re restricting ourselves to portraits of humans in this contest.

The use of high contrast really gives this image its punch. Fitting into the tradition of high contrast Japanese photography this photograph comes alive because of the skill of the photographer. The wide angle lens allows us not only to view the boy with his amazing expression, wide eyed, but to see the context of the space with the inclusion of the two pairs of legs either side of him and the football which gives us the context to the situation. This is a powerful image that has been lifted because it is a black and white photograph. Great technique and use of visual space within the frame. Wonderful. Well done.

This image really stood out from the crowd. So few street photographs that this immediately caught my attention. Lost in thought we can only imagine what she is thinking about. The photographer has done an incredible job to get so close without been spotted. The framing is superb and the lines in the background work well with her folded arms creating a line thoughout the composition. The use of tones add a softness to the image which only adds to how we view this photograph. It's tender which is not easy to achieve within street photography and even harder when the subject is isolated. Incredible capture.
