This is an amazing image. It was absolutely not easy to exclude it from the top 10 positions. I decide to awards some commended images as "shortlisted" for the firsts positions writing some "extra comments". I love this image because it transmits an amazing "film noir" mood where you would like to know how it will finish the story of this man walking in the dark... Congrats !
It has been really difficult to choose the best one black and white street photograph between my shortlisted finals pictures. It's funny that the firsts two images are taken in Cuba.. Maybe because I have fallen in love of cuban streets during my last trip there... In any case, I chose as overall winner this amazing snapshot taken in Havana because, in my opinion, it tell a story that could represent the story of thousands of Cubans that are strongly connected with the streets around their home, the old cars, the cigars and the slow elapse of the time. The lifestyle showed in this photograph leads me to suppose that this shot was made many years ago. Congratulation for winning !

It has been really difficult to choose the best one black and white street photograph between my shortlisted finals pictures. It's funny that the firsts two images are taken in Cuba.. Maybe because I had fallen in love with cuban streets during my last trip there... In any case you are the runner up of the contest with this beautiful street photograph took from above. The composition, as the contrasts between lights and shadows is really strong. In particular, the shadow of the old woman is perfectly positioned in the frame and telling us about the moment when it was taken. The focal point, in my opinion is the walking stick (and its amazing shadow) that tell us about the subject and her old age. Finally, the raw background is really interesting too and It contribute to give more character at this black and white photograph. Well done and congratulation for this amazing work!

***This contest is open to subscribers (members on the Challenger, Pro and Master subscription tiers). However if you're not a paying subscriber you can still purchase entries for £2 (GBP) per image.*** As one of the most fast-paced genres, street photography requires the person behind the camera to react very quickly and intuitively when 'the moment' strikes, leaving little time for too much thought on the composition itself. Distracting colours in the street scene can often undermine the subject, however, making the image black and white restores the original focus and gives the shot a great, classic feel.
