Great candid capture and what a face. Candid street photography which truly captures, perhaps as you say, a contemplative moment. You were right on brief and display great composition in a nice clear clean image. Your depth of field is beautiful and the focal point has me really drawn to those eyes, and what a face! I bet it could really tell a story.
I loved the winning photo as it really dragged me into the scene. Great candid street photography that pulls you in. Face is clear and in focus without being a portrait and is right on brief. It has beautiful composition with the negative space being filled with the wafting smoke of his ciggy. Great depth of field and black and white tones. I like how he appears to be emerging out of the shadows. I think you captured a moment in great clarity and detail.
While this photo is super cool, it was not on brief. In the future please read the brief, as I would love to score excellent photos such as this, higher, rather than exclude it. In your own details you state "... at first was very reluctant to have her photograph taken. With a little cajoling and interactive time she eventually acceded although her face betrays a little reluctance. " Therefore it was not a candid shot. But still gorgeous.
This is an absolutely gorgeous shot, however, it does not meet the brief, and so I could not rate it. Clearly your intend was as a portrait as your tags list portrait and portraiture but not street photography. The contest was for candid street photography and not street portraits or portraits and lacks the essence of its surrounding environment. I did want to consider it as it was in that grey area since the wall on the right is visible , but it appears you increased shadows on the left side hiding perhaps some additional environment. In the end in my opinion it was a portrait, an excellent one at that. Beautiful capture, great tones and light and shadow, wonderful clarity around the eyes. While I am sure you will do well in the crowd rating, keep in mind that this is unfair to the entries who followed the brief, yet will not receive a proper rating. Please ensure you read the brief in the future.
Thanks so much for following the brief. This is a wonderful photo that really struck a key with me and I am sure a lot of others. Great candid street capture. Very nice composition and black and white tones. Good environment in background and I love how it make me feel I am sitting right next to him.
Love it. I have seen that look a thousand times, where the individual is thinking, "Is he taking a picture of me? Naw can't be!" Great street photography and a candid shot with excellent composition and clear surroundings. Right on target with brief. Love the interaction in the background and it reminded me that I need to buy some new socks.
This is a fantastic portrait!!! Unfortunately it does not meet the brief. The contest was not about portraits or even street portraits. In my opinion it lacks the essence of the environment of the street or surroundings. While I wanted the faces to be visible it still had to meet the requirements of candid street photography, not just taken on the street. Had this been a portrait contest you would have been at the top if not first place. The focus and clarity is magnificent. The details are incredible and the tones are beautiful. This is really a fantastic shot. But as I said I could not award it as it did not meet the brief. You will do well in the crowd rating I am sure, which is unfortunate, because many people who clearly met the brief will not place where they should have. I have seen some incredible portraits in black and white here, so I will run such contest in the near future, but please read the briefs so that when you do enter fantastic photos they they will get the recognition they deserve.
First thanks for following the brief. What I love about this is how it makes me feel that I am also immersed in the crowd. and feel that I am there. Love the closeness and the background of the crowd of people. Great lighting on the face and black and white tones. Wonderful composition. If it were raining on me I feel I could easily climb under that umbrella.

I thought this was a pretty fantastic shot and really met the brief. Great focus on faces with wonderful tones and highlights with playful hands and great depth of field. Had the gentleman behind them not been in this part of the picture it would have felt more balanced. As such I commend you on the photo, and as much as I wanted to initially put in the top 10, I could not. But if you keep shooting like this and balance it out a bit, in my opinion of course, I think your photos would be ones that people aspire to take.

This contest is for candid shots of people in the street. In a candid shot, the person is not posed for the photograph. Images should be taken up close, so no shots where the surrounding street architecture is dominant to the individual - I want to see their face clearly on my cell phone, and not a tiny figure in the distance . The closer to your subject the better. Entries in black & white only please.
This was one of my favorite phots but also my biggest dilemma. First thanks for following the brief. The composition was wonderful as were the tones. You certainly captured the moment very well with this one. The only thing that kept it out of my top 10 was that the face was not in focus while the dogs face and his hands were more in focus.
If this were a portrait contest, which it was not, this would have been in my top 3. Fantastic details in the face, great clear focus, beautiful tones of black and white, great depth of field and a face that has 1000 stories for sure. Unfortunately despite its beauty your own tags state it as a portrait and do not mention street photography, and therefore as much as I would have liked to have given it the benefit of the doubt, to even have commended it, I could not, because it did not meet the brief.
