The photographer clearly had an image in his/her mind’s eye and has executed it perfectly. A collection is usually shaped by one person’s passion and the intense focus of the subject helps to communicate this near obsession. Everything is expertly placed in the composition: from the posters to the books and rocks.

There’s a wonderful luminosity to this shot, and the photographer has obviously worked hard to remove any debris in the water to keep everything looking clean and sharp. Your eye is naturally guided through the frame by the stems of the lily pads, and the journey is definitely made easier by the black & white conversion.

**This contest is open to photographers ranked between 251 and 1000 in this week’s Leaderboard.** Some collections are made, and we do love collecting things. From pebbles on memorable beach walks to guitars played by rock legends, and not forgetting stamps, coins, pill boxes and a thousand other beautiful, interesting and sometimes bizarre things. Other collections are found on our travels - cars at a vintage rally, lamps for sale at a Turkish bazaar, or a flock of gulls on a roof.

Meet the expert judge

It’s lovely to see an ordinary subject celebrated with such beautiful light, and a touch of bokeh. Keeping the aperture nice and wide has helped to bring order to the pile - your eye is attracted to the sharpest lines and points - while throwing the background out of focus.
