Composition - Living on the Edge

This photograph really is about living on the edge!. Not only well composed, but well composed for a reason. How would you go about visualising a scenario like this?. Well, you could stay close to the action with your camera and be just in front of the kids, or behind them as they hurtle down the hill, to get a feeling of the being in there with them. Or you could step back and present the whole landscaped scene to the viewer and you would be getting something very different but just as impactful. This time placing the emphasis on composition. The photographer has placed the kids at the top right hand edge of the frame, just at the point when the trolley begins to hurtle down the diagonal horizon of the grassy hill towards the bottom left of the frame, giving the image tension and jeopardy. The photographer has also given context; showing us their home environment and how their lives are very much about making their own entertainment amongst the block of flats where they live. A wonderfully composed story of childhood shenanigans. A worthy winner!

Whilst it may seem counter-intuitive, placing the most important subject near the edge can be surprisingly effective in drawing the viewer’s eye to it. It can work best when a large amount of empty (‘negative’) space is present in the scene, and as a bit of a challenge to the conventional compositional rules it can make for an interesting and engaging approach.

A very clever use of composition using the edge of the frame. Here we get a sense of losing yourself in that endless clear blue of a swimming pool as the underwater swimmer exits the scene with only his/her feet showing; leaving behind the impressionistic waves of aqua blue filling the whole image, inviting you to dive in!.

Here the image is all about clever composition. The photographer has placed the subject at the very bottom right hand edge of the frame knowing the the eye will lead down from the top left, along the diagonal of the jagged line cutting the image in half until it reaches him. Also, the photographer has waited for the subject to puff out a perfect little round cloud of smoke above him to contrast with all the straight lines throughout the image. A perfectly constructed photo.
