Composition - Living on the Edge

A stunning Image perfectly composed for maximum effect. Especially when you have that washed-out white dominating the whole frame. The Photographer has placed the herd of goats amassed in the bottom left edge of frame; all running after the shepherd carrying the kid, with him running into the right-hand egde of the frame looking into camera. A powerful shot full of jeopardy and tension with the action and framing, but also with an interesting colour palette at play here; all washed-out beige and dusty white. Such an arresting photo!. Congratulations on a winning image

What a stunningly cinematic image! A gorgeous and dramatic evening sky fills 90% of the frame but down along the bottom, dancing along the horizon of a meadow, are two clearly-seen, easily picked out silhouetted figures near the bottom left-hand edge; joyous and exuberant underneath the huge enveloping expanse of flame-red clouds in a blue sky. Brilliant and an example of how you can be bold and daring with your composition.

A perfectly composed, clean shot of what we all try to capture but not quite as successfully as this one. The jet trail against a blue sky with the moon in it is a much seen image. This one is great because the photographer has made sure to follow the jet trail of the aircraft as a straight line appearing in the bottom left hand corner and sooting up diagonally as the plane is about to "hit' the moon. On first looking at it, the image reminds me of a jellyfish in a clear blue sea. well done.

**This contest is open to photographers ranked between 1 and 250 in this week’s Leaderboard.** Please read the brief carefully This experiment in compositional technique is asking for images where the main focus of the shot has been placed on or near the edges of the frame. Whilst it may seem counter-intuitive, placing the most important subject near the edge can be surprisingly effective in drawing the viewer’s eye to it. It can work best when a large amount of empty (‘negative’) space is present in the scene, and as a bit of a challenge to the conventional compositional rules it can make for an interesting and engaging approach.

A really intelligent use of very little to work with in terms of content. The photographer has made a really striking image of man plus car plus wall plus window to the maximum effect, just by the precise arrangement of all the components within the frame; pushing the man and car to opposite sides of the frame which is quite original. Obviously the vivid red and the sharp lines are what holds everything together. A really clever image from a photographer who really knows what they are doing. Well done.
