A detailed study of a race in progress, showing nothing other than muscles and machines. This portrays the compactness of a bunch; any slip and everyone gets caught-up. It confirms that you don’t need to include everything to obtain an exciting shot. There is plenty of action here, and an opportunity to study shoes and gears.

A well-proportioned shot with eye-catching colours of three people on simple, traditional bikes, cycling into the sunset. There is an interesting foreground that does not distract too much from the subject. The subtle glow of sunlight brightens this simple silhouette and draws the eye to wonder where they are going.

I assume that this is a chance capture of a lady on a bike. The colours are what make this, for me, plus the wonder of why this lady is so well-dressed. You cannot always choose your subject: I would prefer to remove the dog and give her a bit more space to be riding into. A good picture is one that makes the observer to stop and study it and this one did it for me.

The Bokeh in this shot is just sufficient to provide some detail of the surrounding environment whilst keeping the main subject in clear focus. Time trials are usually an intense test of endurance and you can see the determination to perform to their best written across the faces of these competitors.

The photographer has done well to catch this spill. The picture is well composed and the image very sharp, which is a remarkable achievement considering the situation. Well done for keeping your calm and capturing the moment. I think I would’ve been closing my eyes in horror and shaking the camera with shock!

I asked for photos of people enjoying themselves with a bicycle and this is what you have given! This cycle-tourist is clearly enjoying something on their travels – and moving at speed, too. The bike is an interesting one and I’m wondering what is being carried in all those bags. I don’t need to see the background. Well done!

For an amateur cyclist, the bike shop is a common venue for repairs and having a chat. This Indian shop looks much the same as those of the day that I was familiar with, being crammed full of parts with the aroma of rubber, leather and oil. The picture is well-framed and full of detail (and nostalgia for me!). Thank you!

Bicycles can be a functional form of transport and Cambridge is one of those places where their use is particularly common.. This simple, factual shot captures someone who is comfortable about the practicalities of using this type of transport in a vibrant city. Bicycles are not always used for simple pleasure or racing another.

I am inviting you to submit your photos of people enjoying themselves with bicycles. I am inspired by the Tour de France and, as someone who was once a keen cyclist, would love to be reminded of the joys of cycling. Your photos do not need to be of competitive events, nor of riders clothed in Lycra, colourful though that may be. Images could be of someone on a simple ride, cleaning their bike, or even mending a puncture. Just make sure that there is at least one bicycle and rider in the photo you choose to submit.

A perfect shot of a man trying to control three dogs whilst riding a bike. The sun maintains focus on the rider whilst the pastel shades of the misty background avoid there being any distractions. I’m left wondering what would happen if the dogs gave chase after something, or passed an interesting tree…

A superb shot. The colours work well and there is just enough detail in the surroundings to enhance the view into the sunshine. This shot captures the sun, mist and shadows perfectly. If only the rider had been riding towards me – but you cannot always have everything! There is plenty to study here and that’s what makes the shot.

High speed action is not easy to capture, and this one is full of it! Never-the-less, this shot is crisp and very nicely framed. The riders are jumping out of the shot, to give it even more impact. A wonderful BMX picture.
