This shot is absolutely beautiful and it was a real contender for first place. It was such a tough call to choose as there were some really fabulous shots entered and this photographer has not only captured a great mood, but the composition is wonderful and tonal quality very impressive. The shot has an ethereal quality. Very impressive and works really well in square format. I'm sorry there couldn't be 2 winners! Wonderful photo.

Spiral staircases and dome ceilings are popular subjects to photograph in architecture and there were quite a few submissions focusing on that in this competition. This spiral staircase really stood out amongst them. A very graphic image that appears to have been manipulated (perhaps the use of the black?) ...to maximise the contrast and boldness of the well lit stair. It works beautifully and the proportions within the image are what made it stand out. It's clean, crisp and tonally pleasing and by placing the centre of spiral in the bottom third of the frame, then the light edge of the hand rail in the next third leaves the final third as just black space, thus dividing the frame up really well, and sometimes that rule of thirds is worth using - it's what added to the strength of this submission.

Wow, what a dynamic shot. Really beautifully composed with the diagonal leading in across from the bottom left of frame through up to the top left. It has a great graphic quality and is clean, crisp and captures the wonderful honeycomb panels curving up through to the centre of the frame. to the sky. A truly beautiful image. I could have awarded so many of the submissions first prize in this competition. Another fantastic shot.

This shot was a real eye catcher. It is fun, arresting, colourful, immaculately constructed and beautifully symmetrical. It was quite different to a lot of the other submissions so stood out. It's a busy scene full of life, but there is no immediately visible person. The success of this image is mostly down to it's composition and as the author / photographer pointed out waiting patiently for the right moment was key. It combines showing details in architecture and the location environment where the colour is harmonious. It's interesting to look at and pleasing too. Lovely shot.

Meet the expert judge

As drone photography is becoming more and more popular and producing some amazing imagery, it was great to see such a strong shot entered into the competition. Really lovely image with great colour and composition. The image has obviously been colour enhanced and it really works, making the image almost 2 dimensional. It's clean, interesting and works because it's so well balanced with the centre circle / dome central to the image.. very well executed and really pleasing shot.

***This contest is open to subscribers (members on the Challenger, Pro and Master subscription tiers). However if you're not a paying subscriber you can still purchase entries for £2 (GBP) per image.*** Often, buildings and other structures are so large and imposing that the smaller details are lost. The arches, vaults and masonry are a small part of the whole, but sometimes have the most powerful visual effect. Pay attention to the less obvious features of the architecture that surrounds you. You might just be surprised.

Shooting iconic buildings that have been documented so thoroughly is a challenge. It's hard to find a way to see the building and relay it somewhat differently to re-excite you about a building.... and I feel this shot really did that. We've all seen a hundred and one photos of the Flat Iron building in NYC, but this one felt like seeing it with fresh eyes. Always exploring where you shoot from, what you zoom in on and filling a frame with it is great. Sometimes showing a detail can be stronger than showing the whole building.

This image has a great narrative as well as being nicely composed and fulfilling the brief. Using the people in the shot gives a great sense of scale and captures a moment in time as well as showing architectural detail. The shadows and play of light is lovely through the building / sculpture. I would maybe consider using different depths of field, maybe experiment with lower depth of field so perhaps the background drops softer, but that's just personal opinion and I think it's a good shot.
