**Open to photographers with a ranking outside the top 1000. There are two other 'Flags' contests currently open to other ranks. Take a look at the <a href="https://www.photocrowd.com/leaderboard/">leaderboard</a> for more information on Photocrowd rankings.** Flags have many purposes. Countries, organisations and armed forces have flags that symbolise belonging, and a set of values, but which can also then be subverted for purposes of nationalism or protest. And flags are used for many practical purposes - on railways, at sea, and in many sports, for example. For the photographer they offer an often brightly coloured focal point for a scene, and can imbue an image with a strong narrative context.
