A keenly observed 'street' photograph. The Cuban flag sets the scene and helps tell the story. The man reading his newspaper is perfectly positioned in the frame, with the light spilling from the right side of the frame, adding depth. As always, be mindful and respectful when grabbing sneaky shots of people when they're unaware.

Flags have many purposes. Countries, organisations and armed forces have flags that symbolise belonging, and a set of values, but which can also then be subverted for purposes of nationalism or protest. And flags are used for many practical purposes - on railways, at sea, and in many sports, for example. For the photographer they offer an often brightly coloured focal point for a scene, and can imbue an image with a strong narrative context.
