Great contest!

I love the deep contrast of this photo. I think the choice of B&W instead of color was wise. Color would have lessened the impact of the working conditions. There's a feeling of resignation in the man's face. I feel the DOF was good because it left the background sharp enough to increase the impact of the working conditions.

The heat of this photo jumps off the screen, from the fire to the reflection on the stokers face. The photographer did a great job in adjusting tone. He/she was able to maintain the detail of the embers below the fire without loosing the intensity of the fire itself. Textures, from the coarse riveted iron to the smooth red sheet metal of the boiler give the photo depth and detail. Bravo good work.

They've been with us since the dawn of man. As we evolved so did our tools and as they evolved so did we. From the first stone hand ax to our modern electronic devices, tools multiply our strength and help express our thoughts. For this contest, think outside the toolbox. Sure that hammer is a tool, but so is that spoon in your soup or that pencil on your desk.. The tools must be portable and with no motor or engine (batteries are allowed).

Meet the judge

This is a wonderful image. I like the different shades of green and the way they contrast against her purple dress. I like the detail and texture of the bridge. I personally like the vignetting, it softens the image. The problem with this photo is that the rake is not the subject, in fact, the photo would be unaffected if it was removed. This picture belonged in a different contest, perhaps "Bridges" or "The color Green".

There were a lot of pictures of wrenches in this contest but to me this one stood above the others. The photographer took great care in positioning the wrenches to produce a perfect symmetry. The yellow tint and the reflection made this an outstanding photo.
