A lovely shot which reminded me of Smith's famous photograph of his own children -"The Enchanted Garden". There is a clear story which the viewer can interpret here and needs no further explanation that the girl in the skirt is unhappy with her older sister. The short depth of field brings attention to the two girls. Both are very sharp and the angle at which the shot is taken allows us to see both girls faces and so understand the emotions of the scene. If you had been a few inches lower looking slightly up into the older girls face it might be a bit better. For me the only thing that spoilt it is the position of the watermark, it would have been better in a corner, or simply not there at all. That said it is beautiful photograph.
There were a lot of street photos of homeless people submitted for this contest, but this was the one that really stood out. The contrast between the sharply dressed business man and the homeless person gives the shot real purpose. You have got a moment when the two people are deeply engaged in conversation and that makes the photo come to life. I think if the shot was taken with the camera level it would have worked even better. Well done.
I wasn't sure about this photograph when I first saw it as it is difficult to get a sense of the subjects without seeing any part of their faces. However I kept coming back to it. The little boys hand on the older man's shoulder (perhaps his grandfather?) is what made the shot for me. I really felt the bond between the two subjects. The choice of aperture is also perfect as there is enough of the water in focus to great a peacefulness to this image.

When I saw this I immediately felt that it would make a great shot as part of a photo essay. Perhaps a story on girls in boxing? The slight blurring of the coaches arm creates drama and the big smile on the girls face clearly shows she is enjoying her sport. There are a few composition issues - the rings coming out of the coaches head so if the photographer had mover round towards the girl a little more I feel it would have improved the shot. This would also have allowed us to see a little more of the coaches face. The image is well exposed and the girl in sharp focus. Well done.

Although there are a few technical issues with this shot it immediately leapt out as a compelling photograph. The low angle that the photographer has used really gives this picture impact. The blur of the running man running into the frame portrays the sense of urgency in his desire to get to his destination. Will he make it to his tram stop on time? If only the man in the suit had been blurred and the background sharp then this would have been a really great shot.

W. Eugene Smith (<a href="https://www.magnumphotos.com/photographer/w-eugene-smith/">www.magnumphotos.com/photographer/w-eugene-smith/</a>) is regarded as one of the most talented photo journalists who set the standard for the photo-essay. In his words: “My station in life is to capture the action of life, the life of the world, its humour, its tragedies, in other words, life as it is. A true picture, unposed and real”. In this contest let us see your images that tell a story about the subject in a natural unposed style.
This is a well composed and dramatic photo. You have used leading lines and the dramatic sky with heavy contrast to add drama to the shot. There is some strange conflicts in the image though. The man looks a bit too well dressed and the dramatic setting don't quite fit with words on the card and I am not sure if that is what you were deliberately trying to highlight? Smith was a genius at conveying stories through his images partly because he spent time getting to know his subjects before picking up the camera. I don't get the feeling from the image that you engaged with this person? Perhaps if you had spent 10 mixtures chatting to this guy first and then taken the photos you might have come up with something which told his story without the need for the card. Your camera skills and eye for a good shot though are spot on.
The photographer has captured a moment. We can see the girls connection by the expression on the faces. The short depth of field and the fact the subjects are sharply in focus makes the shot work. Smith tended to work with short focal lengths (35mm, 50mm) and if the photographer had been able to get closer and use a shorter focal length lens than this would have been an even better shot. A nicely composed image and taken at just the right moment to show us the connection between the subjects. Well done.
This really brought a smile to my face. It is difficult to know what is exactly going on here. The low shooting angle gives the shot real impact. The composition is exciting too. The feet in the foreground leading the eye up to the smiling girls face is what makes the shot work. It does raise lots of questions. What is the girl smiling at? Why are the feet in the air? So the story is not clear but it is still a very pleasing photograph and the intrigue allows the viewer to make up their own story.
Great close shot of some street action here. You did well to get in so close considering how crowded it looks. We can see the expression on the card holders face together with the smiling face of the man slightly behind give us the impression he must have a good hand. Although it would have been nice if you could have got further round so we could see more of the other player, the shot is well composed and well executed.
A really dramatic action shot enhanced by the conversion to black and white. The spray adds atmosphere and make s the shot more interesting. For me the "Crab Man" is too much in the centre of the frame, I think this one of those shots where you should have stuck to the rule of thirds. You have also used a long focal length lens and you could have achieved a much more dramatic shot with a 50mm lens and got closer to the action. I suspect that the position of the boat would not allow you to do this so well done for getting this and producing a dramatic photo.
