Congratulations on gaining second place in the lichens competition. You have captured a selection of lichen forms in a subtle way that prevents the shrubbier forms from obscuring and overpowering the more encrusting types. The light is bright but allows the colour of the lichens to be seen. You have chosen your depth of field well, so that the lichens are the clear focus whilst the blurred background is enough to show that this was taken in-situ. Well done.
Congratulations on being the winner of the lichens contest. This was a good find as it was probably quite small. The image is nicely composed with the lichen placed on the intersection of thirds. The leading lines of the iron framework point to the lichen and are a focussing point, yet they don't overwhelm the subject. The background although having quite a vibrant hue of green is sufficiently diffuse so as to be a background. The lighting is good although I think I might have added a little bit of vignetting. Very well done and a deserved winning image.

Meet the judge
Congratulations on gaining a top ten placing. I thought the autumn colouring of the conifer leaves provided a nice foil for the lichens. You have a number of different lichen forms within your compostion which is good to see. I could see this image working well on a greetings/gift card as it has an artistic appeal. Well done.

Lichens exist throughout the world from storm lashed seashores, to the artic tundra and in rain forests, and a whole range of other habitats. I would like to see images of lichens from your part of the world or from somewhere you have travelled. The lichens should be the clear focus of the image although you may also include the substrate the lichen is growing on. Your image may be in colour or black and white, and may be macro or give a wider view. You can be creative in your imagery as long as the lichen is the obvious subject. In the interests of fairness I will consider images incorporating watermarks, banners or any other means of identification as being not on brief and would ask crowd raters to do likewise. To add to the viewers interest please indicate in your title or description where the lichen was photographed and any other details you are able to provide.
