This is a photograph to be proud of and I hope it's on the photographers wall, I would want it on mine. The birds mirror the beautiful contrasting shades of the green surroundings of the forrest and you can almost hear the sounds that must be going on here. A very pretty and timeless frame of a community that spend a lot of their time on the water.
With slightly different framing, this would have had a much deserved higher ranking. The light is stunning as it passes through the fishing nets and the fact that all hands are on is great timing. Really lovely colours around the boat, but it just needed a little more breathing room I feel. Lovely moment .
A very interesting moment from life at sea. Personnel arriving or leaving deck. What's striking is the altitude of the helicopter. Perhaps operating procedure's are different today from what they were at the time this was taken but it seems low and very exciting. A great insight to a world few of us get to see. I looked through a few images submitted from the services and this one stood out to me. Speed of frame is just right. I like the way the rotors leave frame giving further scale to the size of the aircraft.
Stunning frame in a stunning place. The colour pallet couldn't really be more perfect. The lady to me seems to have the furrowed brow of someone who perhaps doesn't have the easiest of lives yet seems to be in the most tranquil of settings. The composition is great with the lilies nesting the frame. Over processed but a wonderful moment.
The boats sit like a flower on the shallow water, one petal breaking up the frame. The flora seems to be slowly moving just under the surface and there's a great warmth that comes from the beautiful colour variations all through the photograph. Lots to take a way from a look at life of this fishing community and how they live. Congrats on first place.
For a lot of us it's easy to forget that being on the water is a part of day to day life. Moving between islands involves a commute by boat in much the same way that many of us use the metro each morning. Seems like a pretty good way to live to me and this photograph is emotive of that. lovely contrasts and framing. One of my favourites of the competition.

I was hoping to see some portraiture in the competition and this one stood out for me. A look at subculture is always a treat, and seeing this couple aboard their canal boat with their caged birds makes for an interesting photo story. Id have liked to have seen a little more attention paid to composition but the moment and colour palette make up for it.
Communities that spend most their lives on the water are often the best places to find the best food. Often generational, these communities have a respectful balance with their environment. I think that's what comes across in this image for me. I like the bold contrasts and its a well picked moment.
For those with the means, the cruise is often a staple when it comes to spending time during retirement. Often it's portrayed with a hint towards adventure. A chance to finally see the world. There's a soft melancholic tone to this photo, however. Autumnal. A retirement home with a view. An evocative image.
I think a lot of people have wondered at some point or another what it might be like to disappear to work it sea. To escape the rat race. Arguably this would be the type of image that pops in to the imagination. A feeling of being away from it all out in the open vastness, far from all the troubles back on land.

Lots of people love life on board - whether sailing in a yacht, living it up around the world on a giant cruise ship, or passing the months in a canal boat, happily moored by the towpath and growing a herb garden on the roof. All have their own unique adaptations, styles and ways of passing the time, and are each quite different from life on terra firma. This contest welcomes any images that shine a light into life on board a boat or ship, which might be documentary, still life, interiors or others.
