For this contest I am looking for your photos that convey a feeling of loneliness or isolation. The images can include people but that is not compulsory. Images can be in colour or black and white.
As the photographer says in their notes it was by sheer chance that they noticed the man alone in the centre of the picture while all the other tables have groups of people. Positioning the man alone in the centre of the image is excellent and gives the impression he is totally alone among all the other people.
The fact that this is in black and white and extremely elongated has a strong impact on the viewer. The darkness on the left of the picture adds a sense of foreboding and uncertainty. The woman certainly seems alone and her dress gives the picture a feeling of timelessness. Congratulations on being in first place.
The title of this picture says it all really. Frank was probably the woman's partner and now she is all alone in the world. The feeling for this is enhanced by the picture being in black and white and I am sure a metaphor could be found for the bridge. The addition of the small dog seems to add some comfort to the woman.
The man is probably just waiting for his train to get home but the lighting in this picture and starkness of the station is extremely well done and his position on the far right of the image gives a sense of the man's isolation. I am always drawn to symmetrical images and this one completely ticks my visual eye.
This somehow reminds me of my mother in her later years. Every time I visited the TV would be on even if my mother was not paying attention to it. When I asked her about this she would always say it was for company and did not make her feel so alone. The photographer's mother's expression is one of sadness and even though she is in her home there certainly is a feeling of loneliness within her. A very poignant image.
A beautifully evocative picture which I feel has been edited to a very high standard. The lighting almost looks theatrical and manmade although in such a setting as Iceland it most probably is naturally occurring. It certainly has the feeling of the small figure in complete isolation from the outside world.
The title is 'Bored' but I think the photographer has captured an expression on the face of the child as one of sadness and loneliness. Even though there is a comforting hand on his shoulder he stills seems alone in the world around him. I like the way the boy is in soft light. A picture that was taken in an instant but one which is superbly spotted.
In this competition there have been many portraits of people on the street leading a very sad and dismal existence. This one stands out for me due to the fact the woman is covering her face and is obviously in despair. There is also something sad about the fact she is wearing a pair of old modern trainers.
A very basic image but one which is beautifully crafted. The diagonal lines make a huge impact in this concrete world as does the single figure descending the stairs. I can not imagine this picture in anything but black and white. The texture on the concrete also adds to the sense of loneliness in the image.
I like this picture due to the lone figure's' expression and the light. The mist gives a good atmosphere to the picture as does the decision to do it in black and white. Even though he has a dog for company the fact that it's head is looking away from the man seems to make him even more alone. I would personally have not cropped the picture in a way that has cut off part of the man's shoe and the bench.
The notes mention mental turmoil and that is evident in the picture. The lights of the passing vehicles indicate life moving at a fast rate while the male in the picture is oblivious to the vehicles passing by. The poles in between the figure and the vehicles also adds to the separating between him and the rest of the world. The softer tones of the image also helps the gloomy and sad feel.
This picture gives one a rather depressing feeling which it is completely entitled to do. It makes us feel that the man in the wheelchair is completely alone and isolated from the world passing him by. I like the colour tones used. I do not know if the gentleman sitting knew his picture was being taken and just turned to look at the photographer but the expression on his face seems to say it all.
I'm not sure how the photographer got the effect of the people at the top of the picture in focus while those on the pavement have movement but however it was done it is very effective. The picture is one of a man alone as the world moves swiftly around him. My one issue on a personal level is the girl who is in focus as well as the man. Her white coat draws the eye away from the man begging on the ground.
