Made of Stone

January 2024

I was drawn to this image due to the photographers use of symmetry. I like how the light from the arches lift the bottom third of the frame and is balanced by the detail of the roof. An attractive image.

I like the colour pallette of this photo. The way that the photo has been edited brings interest through the tone and texture of the stone. I like how the vertical light is mirrored in the foreground by the lines of the door frame. A good image.

I was drawn to this image as I really like the courage of the photographer to submit a simple yet strong entry. The use of light and shade are complimented by the square frame. I also liked the tone and texture of the walls denoting age and interest in the building.

I like this architectural look up image at night. The photographer has done well to capture and frame the symmetry which drawing out the details of the arch. The time of day has led to some of the vertical lines feeling a bit soft but overall a nice image.

I like the idea behind what the photographer is trying to achieve in this image, however the square framing feels a little off balance. The image may be more interesting if it were flipped upside down to draw the eye of the viewer rather than pull it upwards.

I like how the photographer has used the stone arch to frame the image. The sunlight brings out the stained glass window and brings interest with the pop of colour. The slice of light is delicate and provides drama and interest for the viewer. Lovely image.

I found this to be a very striking and memorable image during the judging process. I like how the photographer has framed their shot with the heavy use of contrast which makes the edge of the photo drop off into darkness accentuating the text of the material and the subject. A worthy winner, well done.

I like this image because the photographer has understood and captured the brief. I like the how the foreground is balanced against the blurred background and the use of lines and contrast which bring interest to the photo. An interesting image.

This image immediately made me feel as though the photographer was trying to capture a story rather than just a moment in time. I like haphazard feeling that is presented in the foreground with the neat lines of the pyramids in the background. A very nice image.

I like the creativity and interpretation of the brief of this image. It reminds me of a Salvador Dali painting. I like how the sky merges with stone columns and stairs. This is a very well edited and executed image. Well done.

I was drawn to this image because of the originality that the photographer. The building shot on its' own would not have brought the same interest as the puddle reflection. I like the blue pop of colour in which the stone building is framed. Well done.

I like this black and white image and feel that the photographer has possible had their editing dictated by the digital noise in the original image. This has led to a softness in how the stone is presented. The use of contract works well to give depth.

Submitted images must show things that have been made using stone, rather than simply stone itself in nature or excavated. That most fundamental of materials, which for millennia has been used for our good. We build walls to house us, carve it in commemoration of the dead, we grind spices in stone bowls, sculpt art from it, and in the past ground our crops between huge wheels of it.

I like the photographers use of the stone wall to draw the eye of the viewer. The texture of the wall set again the natural environment on either side partly in the foreground nicely balances the image. The clouds and sky against the city scape also bring more interest to the viewer. Well done.

I like the simplicity and framing of this image. The lines and curve are appealing to the eye, but there is also detail which brings interest to the viewer. In my opinion the photographer was right to present this image in portrait as it makes it a more striking image. Well done.

I like this original interpretation of the theme made of stone. The photographer has been creative in their entry adding interest, reflection and texture to their shot. It feels ever so slightly off balance due to the white window frames at the bottom of the image not being 180 degrees. A slight adjustment would improve and make this a very good image.
