This image jumped out at me - I initially didn't think that I could consider an abstract effect like this, but it works so well, with the abstract patterns following the shapes of the cabs and umbrellas. You still get the impact of the underlying photograph, but with the abstract pattern turning this into a greater artwork.

I love this image. The slight blur adds to the charm, and combined with the overall colour tone gives an immediately dream-like feel. The burst of light behind the fisherman's face hides his features, and this being a reflection and upside down works additionally to mask the details. Together this all helps my mind to lose itself into the intrigue.

The colours and mixture of areas of focus and blur made this stand out to me. There is something cinematic about it and the result appears grander than the individual elements. The mixture of pink / orange hues on the left, with purple / blue on the right would ordinarily be difficult to match, but with the empire state building in the centre as a partition this is a charming work.

Stunning colours and beautifully framed between the two tall buildings making this an energetic and interesting photograph. The green light on the right appears to rise and move with the smoke - making me think of a portal being opened!

A lot of the photographs submitted showed a dark and gritty side to New York, but this photograph captures a vibrant, almost cartoon-ish street scene, making the everyday seen joyful and interesting. On closer viewing it is the cars that have an ethereal and uplifting shine to them, showing blue sky and clouds, while the people are ordinary - and yet their motion and clothing makes them fit perfectly into this scene.

A wonderful photograph and a close second place! The tones and overall contract make this a pleasing image on the eye. The shafts of light and steam seem to make the image dynamic and instil it with an energy, and the expression of the central figure intrigues - does he seem happy? is he enjoying his job or thinking of something unrelated that is bringing him joy? perhaps he isn't happy at all, and just focused on his work - either way, it intrigues and draws me in.

This photograph has an other-worldly feeling to it, at once capturing the mundane and simultaneously making it seem dramatic and extraordinary. The shine on the buildings, car and road contrast with the dark of the shadows and the man and the long road draw you further in until you almost feel present.

A wonderful image painting a thousand words. The women gazes as if through a window into the world outside. Her expression speaks of something - hope? fear? or simply thoughtfulness. The world that we see outside is grainy and gritty (and yet the photograph is in sharp focus where it needs to be) - it seems a dangerous and lonely place. What does she see out there for her?

The warmth of the sun seems to burst from this photograph bringing to life the street scene and transmitting both a moodiness and a hope for the day ahead. The edges of the photograph are dark with blue tones to the left, with the centre warm orange / yellow. The transition between is smooth and flows down the road as if following the rising sun.
