Nightlife

June 2022

A very well constructed image, that's perfectly lit. the composition is also perfect. This image is all about carefully thought out lighting. The lighting is what gives this image its power. Two silhouetted figures against a smoky backdrop underneath two lights that show us where they are - a railway yard at night. Then you have the ground lit delicately, and disappearing into darkness towards the right side of the frame. But looking up on the right we see the face of the train driver lit within the small circle.. lit by the orange glow of burning coal maybe?. Anyway, the lighting gives you a real sense of mood and place in this photograph. Well done.

I find this image beguiling, not only interestingly backlit but principally because it has a narrative. A glittering-looking evening full of promise, with sumptuous surroundings and a nightlife culture full of wealth and splendour; but that doesn't stop it from having a feeling of melancholy as we see a dinner jacketed gentleman sitting on his own, facing away from the background montage of partygoers all having a good time. He is lost in thought staring at his wineglass...wondering what his life really means..(?) was it all worth it?.. I have everything but am I happy?... the young waitresses all gloved up standing to one side waiting and looking on.. part of what's happening but not part of "their world".. it almost looks like a still out of a Gatsbyesque drama. well done. A well composed interestingly lit , very thoughtful, and cinematic image. A deserved winner.

This photographer has really turned his image into a work of art - giving it an abstractness that makes it worthy of being hung in an art gallery somewhere. We photographic enthusiasts know all about slow shutter speeds and how we can use all those street, car and neon lights to good effect. But I think here, he or she has taken it to another level with the horses spinning around at high speed on a carousel. I love how the shape and lines of the lights surround the two horses in a sea of colour. The 'galloping' horses and the swirl of light around them give it a very dynamic feel. I love this image!

What we do after dark, in pubs, bars and clubs, in theatres and restaurants, on the street, in taxis and buses. Intrepid photographers who get in the face of this enjoyment, often getting carried along with it as well, document this expression of the human need to socialise, let go, and reward ourselves for our daily efforts.
