One of the unwritten rules of composition is "Everything is better in threes". That is one of the things that drew me to this shot out of the myriad of Puffin images entered. Crisp image of a tight grouping of three with a strong composition. All three are looking outward from the center of the image and the colors are pleasing to the eyes. Great job!
This is a great example of an action shot showing the environmental behavior of these birds. The fact that it works in black and white where every other image is color, proves the strength of the composition. Every aspect of the shot pulls you into the center and the transfer of nesting materials between the subjects. The birds are the most contrasty portion of the shot and the 50% grey background does not detract from the action. Great job!
There were a number of very good images in this contest but this particular image stood out to me for a number of reasons. First, it is a behavioral action shot that captures the most important moment in the daily survival of the species. That is an important part in capturing the essence of any wildlife. Secondly, the image's composition is perfect. You couldn't have asked the bird to pose more perfectly, with the fish in mid air and the bill open to snatch it. Centered, framed, high speed to capture every single drop of water and perfectly focused. Fantastic image! Congratulations!
There was just something about this image that I felt made it stand out. The diagonal linear composition is an eye-catcher and the photo truly captures the environment that these birds choose to live and nest in. Having the shore and ocean in the background accentuates the height of their nesting cliff and the rain drops add to the effectiveness of this environment as well. Thanks for entering this image in my contest!

In this contest I would like to see your photos of true pelagic birds. Gulls are not considered to be true pelagic birds so I ask you not to submit photos of gulls in this contest. Pelagic birds are birds that live primarily on the ocean, only coming to land when breeding and raising their young. These birds include albatrosses, shearwaters, fulmars, gannets, petrels, auklets and related birds. Photographing these species most often requires going out to sea to be able to find the subject, unless you are fortunate enough to live on or near an island that hosts breeding colonies. Photos can be in colour or black and white. I look forward to seeing your images.
