Meet the judge
This image captures an iconic monument with a sense of warmth and ceremony that feels genuinely inviting. The low, golden light gives the scene a timeless quality, and the people walking through the structure complete the story without overwhelming it. Their presence feels natural, almost essential, as if the monument comes fully alive only when crossed and inhabited. It’s a beautifully balanced photograph that honours both the architecture and the life around it.
This photo immediately drew me in for the way it blends monumental architecture with the quiet movement of everyday life. The human figures are small, yet they anchor the entire scene: they give scale, depth, a sense of presence that transforms the monument from something distant into something lived. The light and reflections create a dynamic space that feels both cinematic and authentic. Congratulation!
What I love most about this photograph is the contrast between the absolute stillness of the winged figure and the soft, almost floating movement of the people around it. The monument stands firm, grounded and unmoving, while the visitors seem to drift through the space, as if carried by an invisible current. This tension between solidity and motion gives the image a quiet power. I chose this position because it captures the idea that monuments remain constant, even as life flows endlessly around them.
What drew me to this photograph is the way it uses scale and framing to emphasise the monument’s presence. The columns feel massive and immovable, yet the small human figure in the distance brings the whole structure into proportion and gives the scene a sense of quiet narrative. I appreciate how the composition guides the eye naturally through the space, allowing the viewer to feel both the weight of the architecture and the subtle human story within it. It’s a strong, balanced interpretation of the theme.
This image offers a contemporary and visually striking take on the relationship between people and architecture. The reflective surfaces and converging lines create a dynamic environment, and the figures walking through it feel perfectly integrated into the space. There’s a sense of movement and modernity that contrasts beautifully with the more classical monuments in the selection. For me, this photograph stands out for its energy and its ability to make the viewer feel part of the scene.

For this contest I would like to see your photos showing people alongside monuments, exploring the relationship between human presence and the monumental forms of cities. The human figures may be small but should play a vital role in revealing the monument’s impact. Colour or black and white photos are welcome. Monuments can be symbols of the memories, power and identity of a city, their meaning being completed by the people who move, pause and gather around them, so I look forward to seeing your photos.
