Wonky fireplace apart though I adore this image. A lovely period interior, a figure to add human interest and that gorgeous fire to add warmth and light up the ladies face in such an engaging way.
Congratulations on a splendid image.
Thanks to everyone who entered this competition. There were a lot of extremely strong entries and I had great trouble in selecting and then ranking my top ten.
This is my winning entry and what a fine photograph it is. In terms of a period interior with suitably attired people it certainly fits the competition criteria but it’s also full of detail and invites the viewer to weave a story about these two characters.
The conversion to monochrome is well done and fits the period portrayed and the direct stare of the woman grabs the attention and holds it.
All in all a most excellent entry and congratulations on first place.

Painterly best sums up this beautiful image such that I wouldn’t be at all surprised if the photographer was a distant descendent of Johannes Vermeer!!
Lovely light, lovely colours, great attention to detail and a very pretty young model all make for a most satisfying viewing experience.
Congratulations on a very well deserved top ten placing.
It’s such a pity that I can’t award joint first place as, like my winning entry, this image is also a beautiful period piece that inviites the viewer to concoct a little story about these two engaging characters.
The composition is excellent with the people placed well in the frame and the post-processing is spot on. The colours are rich yet subdued and complement the image perfectly such that I can’t imagine that a monochrome conversion would be nearly so effective.
Congratulations on second place and an image of the highest order.

I was in a dilemma when judging this image as, superb as it is, it depicts a railway platform of I would guess the 1940's and is therefore a period exterior rather than interior.
That said, the platform recreation lies within a museum and is therefore an interior of sorts although not quite the type of period interior that I was imagining when writing the competition criteria.
Because of this ambiguity I don't feel confident in pushing this image into the top ten but it surely deserves a commendation of the highest order.

See more contest details
For this contest I want to see your photographs of period interiors which contain one or more people dressed in costume reflecting the period and era of the room setting as would typically be found in living history museums and historical properties. When included in period interiors, suitably dressed people can add interest and context to an otherwise static image. For the purpose of this contest entries must be set in an era pre-dating the 1960’s so no modern rooms or people in contemporary dress please. Suitably dressed dummies or mannequins are acceptable in place of or alongside real people. Colour or monochrome entries are allowed but the people must be in period costume.
