Plastic Pollution

November 2023

Wow, I love the textures in this image, and the juxtaposition between natural textures and cracks and manufactured ones. Great attention to detail, and lovely composition as well; I like that the plastic and sand split the image frame diagonally. Well done!

Very creative take on the theme! It reminds me a bit of the famous photo series of albatross chicks with stomachs full of plastic. Great use of color to create an eye-catching and ironically playful scene – one that helps convey that the dangers of plastic pollution reach humans, as well.

This is such a striking and mysterious image. The white plastic bag stands out so starkly from the dark background; it almost looks like it is suspended in space or some other ethereal realm, rather than water. The leaves floating around it add to this effect. I also appreciate the irony of message on the bag - “I’m back” - as plastic is something that never goes away. Great job!

I love how bright and colorful this image is, and I especially enjoy the geometry here. Great job with composition, too. Are these Boba straws? For all the havoc they wreak, plastics also carry plenty of aesthetic appeal and create fascinating patterns and textures. Well done!

This image is simple yet compelling and symbolic: a lone piece of plastic waste next to a singular footprint. The human presence and responsibility for the plastic waste catastrophe is implicit. Nice job with framing and composition; I really enjoy looking at the textures, as well. Well done!

I love the layers in this image. The skeleton of the turtle in the foreground and the rusted remnants of the ship in the background really work well together to convey decay. The colorful plastic bottles sprinkled along the shoreline also catch my eye and add some helpful, ominous context. Well done!

What a striking image! It’s always a bit startling to see random doll parts out in the world, but stumbling upon a head on the ground is especially jarring. I appreciate the composition here, and the way the head is similar in shape to the rocks surrounding it. The contrasting colors are particularly eye-catching, as well. Great attention to detail and great job!

What I find striking about this image is the way the heaps of garbage in the foreground mimic the shape of the building roofs in the background. Great attention to repetition and pattern, and nice job with layering! I also appreciate the brightly colored bits of trash that catch my eye and keep me looking around the image for more detail. Well done!

I enjoy looking at all of the textures in this image and appreciate the juxtaposition happening in the frame here. The organic, supple form of the fern contrasts sharply with the artificial material and rigid, angular shape of the plastic stencil that ensnares it. Great lighting and simple yet compelling color palette, as well. Great job!

What a unique twist to see an image of plastic pollution underwater instead of floating on the water’s surface! I love the submerged perspective and the rather ethereal lighting here, and the eerie scene that these create. I’m also struck by how closely the pram resembles the underwater plant life. Well done!

I love how detailed and colorful this image is; my eye is drawn all the way around and into the frame. Paradoxically, what comas across as a cheery scene has rather bleak connotations; as the title says, the plastics we see here are the “pollution of tomorrow.” Great framing, and nice job including the sales clerk in the image, as well.

Wow, this is a compelling image. Great job using the aerial perspective to tell the story and convey the scale and scope of the plastics pollution problem in this environment. I like how colorful the scene is – although I know this is a bit of a visual paradox, because this toxic rainbow is the result of all of the plastics strewn on the beach. Great job!

Sadly there will be lots of opportunities for shooting new imagery for this contest, so ubiquitous is discarded plastic, however remote our location. Plastic pollution awareness is growing, and your imagery will be another timely reminder of the need for us to keep our world free of it, and to look for more sustainable solutions to our practical needs.

There is something deeply ironic about this image that I appreciate: people transporting large quantities of drinking water via watercraft, perhaps because there is not potable water at their destination. However, the plastic waste that results from all of the bottles will further pollute the waterways and make drinkable water even scarcer. Great attention to gesture and composition; I really like the aerial perspective and the bright colors in this image, as well. Nice job!
