Portraits with context

February 2026

I like this photo for the simple joyous feeling that I get from it. The backlit flare effect helps ad to the overall natural and whimsical feel. The stark, open field gives us a time and place and all the dandelion bits help create a strong composition. Nothing about this is overdone. The image is full of freedom, childish wonder and hope.

I love this image on so many levels. It's colorful, direct, full of visual information that tells a clear story of who this man is. The subjects gaze is wonderful too. Composition is solid.. Lighting is soft yet crisp. I also like the medium to tight depth of field. which allows me to see the background items in focus and helps tell the story.

Wow! What a shot! This woman looks like she's an extension of the tree itself. What with her windy thin frame, she fits in perfectly. The chair is simply her base. I would have loved to see this image in color as well. It's so strong that I bet it looks every bit as wonderful in color as black and white.

Contextual portraiture is portraiture that sits the subject within a wider scene that brings more meaning to them. This might be their location, objects or other people in the scene, or their clothing, jewellery or possessions that add more to their story. These might tell us what the person does for a profession, the lifestyle they lead, their socio-economic situation or the particular news story they’ve found themselves a part of. The context of a portrait doesn’t need to tell the whole story, and it might even create more questions than it answers. But it does clearly distinguish the portrait from many studio portraits, where the focus is largely on the subject’s physical attributes and expression.
