I love the mood created here, with the dark brooding sky contrasting with the rich golden colour of the crop field. What makes the image for me is the highlights picking out the wires between the poles, which elevates the image from a rather mundane rural documentry shot to a beautiful creative capture. Simple but very effective, well done on your top ten placing.
This image is all about the light, as the droopy wires are superbly highlighted against the deep midnight blue sky. The subject is obvious, but the slightly closer viewpoint brings a more abstract feel to the shot, which I like a lot. Despite the overall dark tones, you have done well to show the black of the pylons so well against the dark backdrop. Super image, well done on your top ten placing.
A striking graphic image, of some simple shapes set against a plain white backdrop. What I especially like is that the structures are creatively symmetrical, but not perfectly so, which means the image does not look forced as would no doubt have been the case had the image simply have been mirrored in post-processing. The post-processing has been very well handled, as it shows you have realised the potential of the scene to become a strong abstract by removing all midtones and leaving just white with black lines. Great work, well done on your top ten placing.
There is a strange beauty to this heavily industrialized landscape. The light is gorgeous, creating a lovely gentle mood of calm, and allowing the pylons and industrial buildings to be silhouetted against the sky, which retains just the right amount of brightness. The colours work well, with some cooler blues contrasting with the warmer peachy hues and golden browns. The still of the water allowing for some perfect reflections completes the scene. Well done on your top ten placing.
I love the simplicity of the composition of this image with a gently curving divide between the harsh yellow of the crops and the clear blue sky above. As with all of the "rules" of photography, you have shown that by ignoring the "rule of odds" we can still have an impactful image with just two main subjects, which have been evenly placed in the composition. The simplicity contributes a look of absyract to the shot. Great image, well done on your top ten placing.
A truck stop will never be a place of beauty or an exotic location, and here we have a great image documenting the rather grim setting of the truck stopover site. The all-important utility poles and wires are a key feature, with attention being drawn to them as they dominate the sky as they are silhouetted against the lighter part of the sky. The inclusion of the birds in flight lifts the mood a little. Super documentary image. Congratulations on your third place finish.
A great image captured in the golden light of dawn, showing a bright dish and associated structure set against the golden browns of the fields. Composition for me is spot on, as we can see the giant satellite installation in reasonably close detail, but composed nicely within the landscape giving a well-balanced image. Great image, well done on your top ten placing.
I love the simplicity and the relative bleakness of this flat landscape, with the utility poles and wires stretching into the distance across the countryside through the low mist. The gentle colours really set the mood and brings a feel of wintery chill to the image. A simple but effective composition. Great image, well done on your top ten placing.
I cannot know your intention when capturing this image, but what I see is the tall, slim and perfectly upright utility pole, juxtaposed with the crooked, squat and straggly tree. In my mind the tree is making a "don't care how I look" statement, as it knows nature will always win out!. The image is almost monochrome in the wintery conditions, and I really like the bright stripe of blown snow snaking up the tree trunk. An image many may pass by, but I think it is a great capture. Congratulations on your winning image.
Meet the judge
A super black and white suburban street scene, with a confusion of poles and cables creating a dynamic and interesting image. The highlighted road surface has a strong curving line which leads the eye into the shot at ground level, and the diminishing poles and cables draw the eye into the image at roof level too. The black and white conversion is very well done, with a great range of tones, and the bright sky allowing the poles and wires to be distinctive silhouettes. Congratulations on your second place finish.

In this contest I would like to see your outdoor photos of pylons, utility poles and masts, and their associated cables, aerials or satellite dishes. You could show pylons forming part of an electrical power distribution network, communications masts or poles supporting telegraph wires etc or structures for transmitting or receiving phone or television signals such as aerials or satellite dishes. Images can show just the wires, but it must be obvious they are utility distribution wires. All images must be captured outdoors. Please do not enter photos of wind turbines, lamp posts, phones or televisions. Images can be in colour or black and white. I look forward to seeing your entries.
