A great close up shot, showing the lids of this collection of wheelie bins in a quite abstract way, which attracted the attention as being a little bit different. Limiting the shot to just two colours also works well and adds to the abstract. Composition is never easy with a subject such as this, but some consideration looks to have been taken with the positioning of the black bin within the surround of red. Well done on your top ten placing.
This image stood out as the likely winner as soon as I saw it. A well-seen shot, recognising the potential of a small young tree standing alone in a 'jungle' of metal, concrete and glass. I love the tones and colours, with the bright fresh green contrasting with the cool greys and blues. Composition is great, and although it was likely the tree that caught your eye, the two shiny bins are very much the subject too, and help make the shot a success. Congratulations on your winning image.
A rather unexotic and mundane backstreet, but a perfect subject for this contest. There are plenty of details for the eye to explore and hold the interest. The limited colour palette works well, and the bin, being the area with stronger colour, draws the eye. Textural details in the slightly shabby architecture completes the scene. Great image, well done on your top ten placing.
I love the classic simplicity of the composition we have here, with just three main elements of the bin, the wall and the paving. The rainy weather really makes the image, as the wet wall and paving takes on a fabulous array of colours and a subtle gleam, bringing the shot to life. Despite the background being rather 'busy', the bin does not get lost with the black standing out. Great image, well done on your top ten placing.

Some will no doubt find this image so dull that they do not even notice it, but that is what makes it so great! I love that it is not trying to be anything than what it is - a dull bin on a dull beach. The colour of bin and the sea echo each other to tie the subject and the background together, and the sand is devoid of any distractions to keep everything simple. A genius shot in my view, similar to the kind of photograph that can sell for millions! Congratulations on your second place finish.
Such a common sight up many back alleys behind business premises which few would think to photograph, but here we can see it makes an interesting subject. I like the close-in crop with the subject filling the frame. Great capture of the light, with nice highlights reflecting off the front of the bins. The limited colour palette makes the photo a success too, with basically just red, black and white filling the frame. Great image, Well done on your top ten placing.

This contest is for your photos of any receptacle used to hold rubbish, garbage, litter and waste objects. Examples include dustbins, pedal bins, wheelie bins, rubbish skips, litter bins and waste paper baskets. These receptacles can be indoors or outdoors, either empty or full of rubbish. It must be obvious the receptacle is a type used to hold rubbish and they must be a dominant feature of the photo. Images can be in colour or black and white. I am looking forward to seeing your entries.
Despite the subject, I love the clean lines of the composition, coupled with the contrasting colours to make a great graphic abstract image. Captured in bright sunlight, we get some deep shadows which gives some depth to the shot despite the relatively flat plane. Great textures and patterns in the rust and scrapes in the metal. Congratulations on your third place finish.
Many entties in this contest showed the receptacles for waste as incidentals in a street scene shot for another purpose. Here however it is great that these collection bins are the star of the show and clearly the subject of the image. The precision of the composition, with all hotizontals and verticals level, makes the shot even more mundane, which for me is a good thing. The inclusion of the little traffic sign adds to the shot too. Great image, well done on your top ten placing.
Meet the judge
As graffiti and rubbish bins are often at home in similar locations ie, back streets and alleyways behind business premises, there were understandably a fair few entries featuring graffiti. Where I needed to be careful in my judging however was to be mindful that this was not a graffiti contest, so not be swayed by attractive artwork in an otherwise average shot. Here however, through the composition, you look to have made a subject of the bins themselves, and complemented them with the presence of the graffiti. The eye is drawn to explore the scene and 'spot the bins' through all the conflicting artwotk, but I like the simple placement of the three bins and the lamp post in a line across the frame. Lovely bright colours too. Well done on your top ten placing.
A super shot making the waste and recycling bins the subject of the image. The line of windows above does not distract, but gives balance to the composition. Everything is precisely placed and levelled, which with a subject such as this can really add to the success of the shot, as the image is more deliberate than a casual passing snapshot. I am uncertain about the use of such a wide digital frame, and as a contest entry for me it adds nothing (if anything, actually detracts to the point is was nearlly not placed), but I have overlooked that and focused only on the photographic element of the overall presentation. Still a great image, well done on your top ten placing.
