Roads and highways

This is a very simply constructed photograph. We all know how it is done. What appeals to me is the soft tones and hues of the car lights. The subtle juxtaposition of the warm car light streaks merging with the hazy blue fog is wonderful.

**This contest is open to photographers ranked between 1 and 250 in this week’s Leaderboard.** Criss-crossing our lands, wherever humanity has gone they’ve built roads to help them get there and back, and to transport the goods that they need to get established and thrive. The architecture and design of the roads, their accompanying signs and markings, and the kinds of vehicles on them can be a dead giveaway for the country or part of the world you’re in. They carry the life of a place around on them, and scenes of daily life play out on their edges.

Meet the expert judge

The golden light of this eerie Icelandic sky is mirrored upon the surface of our subject. The road weaves in to the distance attended by orange markers which zigzag our eye to follow. There we see little dots of vehicles that add to the scale of the scene. Such views are fleeting as the light will soon change.

The brief for our contest mentions signs. For some photographers signs are a wonderful subject to explore as their ubiquity provides novel fodder for keen eyes. I love the giant arrow pointing to the "Stop" signs. Those spectacular roads that weave their way through the landscape must eventually come to halt. I appreciate the humorous undertone of such a relationship.
