Thank you for entering the "Ruins" Contest. I am, obviously, the judge.

I wanted to take a second and let you know I really liked your image.I saw a LOT of images. I sort of divide images into 4 categories... or maybe 5. The fifth being "Why did you even enter this?", and there certainly was a few of those....

Anyway, the first rung on my ladder is a picture. These will have problems with exposure, framing, color, or be over processed or something. But I acknowledge some level of skill.

The next rung is a person who "gets it." Images that are almost there, and just need some help. Most people in this category I gave a personal review to. While it might have been critical, these people will benefit (I hope!) from some help, and will grow as image makers from the criticism.

The third level is really fine images. Portfolio pieces, really.

The fourth and final images are portfolio pieces with just a bit of magic that makes the winners.

Your image was level three. Really a fine image, even a great image. It just lacks that little something that shoots an image into the stratosphere. That is not a critique of you, but just the reality- some images just have that extra BAM that grabs your eye and your attention.

This makes you no less of a photographer. I think your image was great, or even outstanding. I think you have a great eye, and you know what you are doing. I want to encourage you to keep going, because you are doing great things!

There were 1235 images entered. I picked 10 winners, the top 1%. You are in the top 10%.

Thank you for entering. If you would like a specific critique or review of your image by me, please let me know by PM... and please send me a link to your image. I just looked at 1235 images, and many were similar!

Thanks again!

Dave

Great light, great time of day for as shoot. You caught the light perfect and made a just simply fantastic image.

My only MINOR critique (I just cant help it!) is the column cut off on the extreme left- I would have tried to show it all. You can still crop in a bit and cut it out entirely.

Good Job!

***This contest is open to subscribers (members on the Challenger, Pro and Master subscription tiers). However if you're not a paying subscriber you can still purchase entries for £2 (GBP) per image.*** The human eye loves beauty and perfection but, strangely enough, it also loves the opposite. Ruins are incredibly evocative and raise emotions that can be captured within one photograph. In fact, ruins are surprisingly easy to photograph. They're often extremely textured within interesting shapes, and create compelling effects with light and shadow.

I saw 100 images of Stonehenge judging this contest. This is the only one that stands out. Its not just the drone, its the light. The lack of people, the composition. It all comes together to make something new out of something we have seen 100 times.

I would have done some of this differently- I think we all would- but that doers not matter. Your treatment is just great!

Dave

love Love LOVE!!!

Great mood. Tasteful processing. Just a wonderful, peaceful piece.

I think the chose for B&W is a good call- the colors would just distract from the simplicity of the piece. I do not like B&W unless it is motivated, and it works well here.

Framing here is risky- horizon 1/2 in the frame is usually pretty boring; works well here. The windmill pointing out of frame also works- there is enough room from the border of the image for the eye to come back without being forced out of frame.

Awesome image!

Wow, just a wonderful piece. You already know what is right with this image- the light, the color, the framing, the lines.

I just really love this, especially how the clouds vary in their color so much.

Thank you for entering!

I love the isolation, the contrast (of ideas), the feeling and the story this image invokes. The clean sky, while usually not all the helpful, is a bl;essing in this image.

Clean lines, strong visuals, make for a striking image! Great job!

Dave

So I am not so sure this is a ruin.

I dont really care, either. I like the image. A unique perspective, with some really cool lines. This is a wonderful and fun image!

Thank you for entering in the contest!

Dave

I have seen a few Petra images in this contest, and even a couple versions of this image.

This one works. The exposure is tough here, and you got it.

I especially commend you for getting up early to get shots without crowds. I am pretty much on that same team. I also do not like signs of the modern work invading these sorts of images. So I would critique you on leaving the sign in- that would be so easy to take out.

Otherwise great image. Very creative!

Thanks for your image. A pretty nice image.

I am seeing a LOT of images like this. This is a "single point" image, and it is a TOUGH image to take well.

First, and most importantly, you NEED to be 100% EXACTLY centered on your subject. You are not here- the center is left of center in this image.

I am also not sure that you are flat to the subject. You might be but it does not look like it.. You need to be centered and perpendicular to that center line.

To my mind, in "ruins" images, I do NOT want to see anything modern. That means a lot more image editing for you. I don't see any tourists (that is GOOD!), but I do see a truck on the left. That is easily removed, and should have been before entry into a contest.

Your editing and exposure are pretty good. Interesting clouds- ALWAYS a plus.

But Black and White.... why? Unless an image SCREAMS for B&W (and this one does not seem to), I look at a B&W process being used to hide deficiencies in the original image. Don't get me wrong,. I LOVE a good b&w, when it adds to the image. Not sure it does here, but that is your decision. More often than not it is added because the photographer does not know what else to do... so just be careful with "effects"!

Finally, I would say you need balanced borders, especially ion a single point. This has too much to the left (or not enough to the right!). Easily fixed in cropping in post.

You know what would have been fun here? A LONG exposure! Get movement ion the clouds, and blur the water. Maybe not, but thats what I see making this shot better!

Thanks!

Dave

Such a cool image.

I love that you did not center the face, or even put it in an upper third. That it is low makes you search for it, and thus it's meaning. Makes your eye go on a safari!

Nice piece!

This is ALMOST a really great image. DOnt get me wrong- it is good. VERY good. I think the comp is spot on. The exposure is really nice, too. The sun is perfect!

What kills it for me- and keep in mind this is ME, nothing else- is the distractions in the image. The people in the image (to me!) are too distracting. We have ancient ruins, and a timeless view.... and TOURISTS- kills the mood.

Second, that fence on the left should be removed.

Do that and I think you have a much stronger image!

Dave

This is a really cool place, and the idea of it is REALLY interesting.... but the photo itself is really flat. I thought I would look into this, and give you my impressions. I may be right, or I may be all wrong.... these are just some of my thoughts...

OK, so start with the obvious- cool locations. unusual tree roots. Seems like an obvious great picture. The framing and composition, too, is really nice.. The door tucked away in the lower corner is nice- hidden, but a surprise in the picture- GOOD JOB!

Its really the lighting that is not helping this image. Its so flat it almost looks like a flash exposure! Light looks to be coming in straight from camera.

If this WAS flashed, get the flash off camera. Flash on camera results in images like, well, this! If there was not enough light, either get your flash angled OR use a tripod and get a longer exposure. Also, power down the flash a bit.

If this is natural light, learn to recognize it. There are times a flat light like this helps. But I feel this would have been so much more dynamic with a strikingly angular light. Also a bit of chiaroscuro would have helped here- lights and darks define and hide areas.

So the important point here is just when you have something mastered- say composition, something else pops up and says, "hey, learn about me!" The thing I like best about photography is I am ALWAYS learning more, and how to handle new situations.... so just learn and move on!

Thanks!

Dave

Hi!

Thank you for entering.

I am going to comment on this because I think this is a good base image. I think you need to do more to "develop" the image and maker it a lot better.

First, I think your contrast and color is really good- excellent job there!

While it is possible the wall leans in at the bottom, I think that is really an artifact of your wide angle lens. You can avoid this by lowering your lens and keeping it level, but we are a bit late for that!

Do what I would recommend is using "Transform / Guided" in Lightroom, and tracing lines down what the vertical SHOULD be. Play around, you cant break it!

That should help a lot on this image!

Thanks!

Dave

Again, you show GREAT composition skills! Not sure I like the planks in the foreground, but that is YOUR choice, not mine, so I won't count that against you! :)

I also think you have your exposure a bit more in control here. I THINK I might have pulled the whites down a tiny bit, but again, I will count this as your artistic vision, and not count it against you.

The comp is what really grabs me here. I bet you spent a bit of time positioning yourself just right- I can see that! Your symmetry is very nice here.

I find the upper right going out of frame a major annoyance. Not much you can do I guess... but that does distract.

What is out the far window? I definitely would have done a replacement there! Looks like a trash bin or something!

I do like this, thank you for entering!

GREAT image!!!!

Wonderful color, awesome contrast!

And your framing! THIS is what is meant by "Include a foreground, middle and background." You made it work GRAET in this image!

I also like the "feel" of this- the grit I see in the image!

Putting column # 2 centered is the right treatment here I think! I know, you are not supposed to center things, but rules are made to be broken and this break is right on!

So I have not picked the finals yet, so I am not sure if this will be top ten.... but I do LOVE this!

Hi!

Thank you for entering the contest!

GREAT use of lines. Makes or a wonderful picture. Overall the feel is really good, just not outstanding. So while a good, solid quality picture, it has nothing that sets it off to be top tier.

I hope that does not sound insulting, it is not meant to be. You did a great job! I just want you to know why it was not a finalist.

I like this image. It is not spectacular, but it is very good.

lets see what you did good. Let me be blunt, you are in the top 10% on this, and I love it: NO TOURISTS!!!! Good job!!

Also, your comp is just GREAT! It has depth, and is unique. Not flat on, you found a GREAT angle! You are obviously putting thought and craft into your images, and that NEEDS to be called out. So here you go: GOOD JOB!!!!

The exposure is tough. I think I would have stopped down a BIT more, but you still did good here in a tough situation... Nothing really burnt.

So by the numbers, you did a great job. There is just nothing that shoots it into the stratosphere, you know what I mean? That doesnt mean is bad at all... it just does not KILL...

Thank you for entering!

I think you did a GREAT job here. You are working the shot, and you did a GREAT job!

I LOVE that you cleaned your lens (seriously, you would not BELIEVE how many people do this type a shot, and DON'T!)

So I hope you take this in the spirit intended. I am NOT saying this is bad. It is good, very good. But it is not GREAT- you know what I mean? You have the talent and the technical ability, I see that! You hit all the buttons here.

But it is not a GREAT shot. Great shots win. I am going to commend this because I do like what you did.... and it is a good shot. But this does not rise to a great image.

Hope you understand!

Dave

I have seen SO MANY images of Angkor Wat and its environs I am sick of them! Most, while exotic in locale, are poor photographs. I am not a person who believes just because you go somewhere far away and take an image of something unusual that this instantly makes it a good image.

This is the exception!

I LOVE that you have a fore and BG in this image! I LOVE that the exposure is good, and I can see the sky! I love that there are no people in it!

And most of all, I LOVE that hidden face in the BG. Bang on GREAT!!!

What I don't like? That short pole along the path. Those three yellow lines inside the gate.

I think ruins should look like ruins, and not have traces of modern items in it. And its not all that hard to remove them.

Thank you for entering, I really like your piece!~

Like this a LOT- love the moodiness!

I think everything you did here is just great. I would have done some things different, but that does not make me right and you wrong- what you did is totally good!

I think I would have flown a bit lower, and gotten a longer perspective maybe, but that is nit-picky!

Good job!

Dave

LOVE THIS!!!!!

Nicely toned and wonderful framing.

The old vs new contrast is great, too. I see the story here, and that takes this above the ordinary.

The fog in the BG really helps this image, too.

Just wonderfully put together.

Thanks for entering!

Dave

Oh YES!

I would LOVE to see this in color. I think if you had this dynamic a sky you may have done a disservice to make it B&W. But I am not going to question YOUR vision- this is the second of your pieces I have seen, and I do love them both. You have a great eye, and you show me you really have a grasp and knowledge of photography!

I can have all of youre as winners, but I do love them!

Dave

You took a risk here doing a single point perspective. I figure if you are trying this, you would want a good critique.

So you centered the middle arch I guess. I first noticed that the arches did not look centered and that is where I was going. But it looks like you could NOT center ALL the arches because they are offset.

not sure if there is a solution to that!

I guess you did the best you can with this situation. TO my eye the "almost lined up" arches is more of a problem though because it just doesnt look right. I know its not your problem, but this is all about problem solving.

One thing I noticed is a sliver of rock at the bottom. I would have cloned grass into that... the sliver is so small its annoying.

Thanks!

Very nicely composed shot. Flowers add nice color to an otherwise bland frame. I think you did a good job here.

I love the D200- I had one of those when I shot in Greece a while god- great camera!

How is this a ruin? I see a beach with some people on it. Some boats.

You call this sunken ship site- where is it? Why don't I see it?

Regardless, optical problems like the sun flare in upper left is something you should try and avoid.

Dave

Nice shot. I like the low angle, and the focus with the shallow depth of field.

I think you are a bit heavy handed on the vignette....

Are those people down the path? Not sure what that is, but it draws the eye, is that intentional?

Dave

Thank you for entering.

While I appreciate all the time you took in editing this image, there is a lot that just does not work.

I think the most obvious problem is that your light does not match the main image. Low sun produce LONG shadows. My guess? The main image was taken near high sun on an overcast day.

Your sun streaks are good, maybe just a bit too nice and regular (I think you know what I mean!).

Also, the light in the sky- the QUALITY of the light does not match the main subject at all.

You can't just take some dramatic sky and slap it on an image- you need to match them carefully.

Pretty image. I think you worked hard on this, but I think you can do better! Here is what I suggest you do next time...

First of all, if you really want a killer sunset image, you can only get one (per camera). You MIGHT be able to squeak two out, but you should really only try for one.

Set up on a tripod, and just stay there. I see you used a long shutter speed, so that is not a problem. That 5 seconds also blurred out any tourists (you may have manually removed them, too)- GOOD JOB!!! I like that you did that!

The thing about GREAT night shots is the best light is different for different parts of the image. This light is good for the foreground. Had you bracketed this time, you probably could have pulled those burnt out lighted areas in this time, too.

The collusium looks good here, too!

But the sky is better later. Had you stayed here another 1/2 hour, you would have added an amazing sky I bet.

The mid BG is a little flat. As you take other exposures while you are waiting for the good sky, I bet you would have found something for this area.

I am going to commend you for this image because you did a LOT of good things here. I can tell you know what you are doing. Now lets see you take it to the next level and REALLY KILL IT!!!!

I SO love this. The white vs the black is so striking. This could be so good!

I think two things kill this image for being great.

One, the people in the BG on the left, the shack on the right, and that railing. They take away from the excellent mood you have created here.

The second thing you may not agree with, but it is the first thing that grabbed my eye. Its OK to grab my eye and take me in to the image.... but if what grabs my eye takes me out, you need to remove it. And that is the rock to the lower left. Its too big or something.

Ohm, and crop in a little on the left- the half piles of rock are bad.

Thanks!

Dave

I have a couple notes on this, if you dont mind.

One, the fence around the cemetery HAS to go. Super distracting and takes away from the image. I know it takes a while to do, but that is your job as a photographer.

The statue on the extreme left is super cool- give him a BIT more room!

Nice image overall.... LOVE the bit of tree on the upper right- great framing!
