This was an image I kept coming back to, as there is something about it I find intriguing. What makes the image for me is the way the cloth is rolled up and then held a little higher to presumably allow airflow and light into the building, and spece to see out, all indicating there is an unseen story to be told here. I like the limited colour palette with the soft contrast between the browns of the cloth and the rust, with the bluey grey wood. Nicely composed and framed, with just the right amount of the subject captured in the frame. Well done on your top ten placing.

Of the many entries showing close-up details of rusting nuts and bolts etc, this was my favourite. The wide lens aperture has created a good effect of the depth of field, with the main subject being in clear focus, and highlighted further by the softer focus in front and behind. The limited colour palette works well for me and strengthens the shot, as the eye can focus on shapes and textures, rather than be distracted by different colours. Great image, well done on your top ten placing.

What I like about this image is quite difficult to put my finger on. Initially I think it was the straightforward nature of the shot - an old rusty can in front of an old faded building. The image has been well lit, and I especially like how the lighting reveals the various dents in the car. The limited colour palette adds to the shot for me, which somehow increases the overall feeling of being uncomplicated and without unnecessary special effects or gimmicks, and more a sense of 'it it wahat it is' Well done on your top ten placing.

What I find especially appealing about this image is the close-in crop which fills the frame with interesting shapes and textures for the eye to explore. The colours are great, with nice contrasts between the soft bluey grey of the paintwork and the orangy browns of the rust and the top lamp. Composition works well, with the key elements running on a diagonal down the frame. The subject is well lit, and the relatively low contrast, avoiding any harsh highlights and shadows, suits the subject. Congratulations on your second place finish.

I love this type of image, with abstract shapes, colours and patterns. It can be more difficult than may be imagined to capture a successful shot of this nature, with a fine line between a great image and one which is easily overlooked. Many would not have been able to see beyond capturing the whole burnt out car, but with a keen photographic eye and by moving in close, something more is revealed. The contrasting colours are very attractive, and the composition and framing of the rusty painty patterns has been done well. Great image, well done on your top ten placing.

Some may find the random patterns of rust on an old vehicle to be a rather mundane subject, but I find it fascinating and full of interest. This image demonstrates how important the composition of an abstract shot can be in creating a strong image, here using the rust to provide a partial natural frame. Also knowing how to frame such an image, and what little shapes, patterns and details to include or leave out. I love the contrast between the curving shapes of the rust and the darker lines down the paintwork, along with the pleasing colour contrasts between the bright greeny blue and the orange of the rust. Well done on your top ten placing.

A simple detail on the exterior of a building which has been well seen and well captured. The image is well composed and balanced, which is pleasing on the eye. I am unsure whether the colouring of the pipe has been altered at all, but for me the single colour across the image is successful. What I also find appealing is the contrast in the shapes and lines, from the straight lines of the brickwork to the curves of the pipework. Great work, well done on your top ten placing.

This image caught my attention when I first saw it and made me want to explore further to work out what I was looking at. The inclusion of the orange buoyancy aid holder and the window opening provide an initial focal point. The image has been effectively composed, and whether at the point of capture or in post-processing, care has been taken ensuring the horizontal and vertical lines are true, which adds to the strength of the image. Although the subject is fairly simple, there are plenty of details to add interest, such as the rivets on the metal and the patterns of the rust formations. Great work, well done on your top ten placing.

This image stood out from when I first saw it, and was always in my top three. There is so much to appreciate from what many would think is a rather mundane and unphotogenic subject ie. a rusty fence. Choice of aperture and focal length is spot on, as the depth of field is wide enough for the main subject to be in sharp focus with the rest of the subject falling gently out of focus. The long focal length gives a pleasing compressed perspective, which further focuses the attention onto this beautifully shaped metalwork. The very limited colour palette works really well too, with virtually the entire frame filled with rusty browns. Congratulations on your winning image.

A simple subject, but an image which looks to have been composed and captured with care and attention to detail. I love the contrasting colours between the orange rust and the vivid green on the wood. What works especially well for me is the strong composition, and the verticals and horizontals all being true, which I think is important in close-up shots such as this. In addition, everything is well focused with plenty of little details for the eye to explore. Congratulations on your third place finish.

This contest is for your photos of rust. Rust is the reddish brown substance that forms on the surface of some metals when exposed to water or moisture in the air. Your images could show a close-up of the textures, patterns and colours formed by the rust, or maybe a wider view of any rusty objects. You could also show evidence of rust, such as rust stains formed on adjoining paintwork. Entries can be in colour or black and white, but especially if not using colour, it must be obvious that the image shows rust. I look forward to seeing your entries.
