I kept returning to this image for its perfect composition and the use of light and shadow, creating a work of minimalist art. I love the sharp contrast between light and dark, giving a Yin Yang appearance to the subject. Most interestingly, the photographer managed to keep the borders of the boxes on the shaded side visible, thereby maintaining balance of the composition. I'm not sure whether it was by design, or whether it occurred naturally, but it makes for an incredible visual.

Congratulations for placing among the top ten, and thank you for submitting this wonderful image into the contest!

This is a fine example of taking an everyday moment and turning it into art. I love how multiple light sources have created such a captivating shadow of this crowd. The ghostly double images look almost spray-painted onto a wall that appears to already have graffiti covering it. Kudos to the photographer for discovering a magic photographic moment and for taking full advantage of it.

Congratulations on placing in the top ten, and thank you for submitting this wonderful image into the contest!

Now that's what I call shadow play (in the literal sense)! Whomever set up this picture has a sense of humor that you can't ignore! Not only is it well conceived, but it well executed, too. This image deserves mention; thank you for entering it into this contest!

This image is an excellent study of the different ways a single light source can create interesting shadows. I love the symmetry of light and dark as well as the pattern that the striped shadows make on the Styrofoam head. Even the graduated lighting and soft golden glow of the wall behind the head contributes a depth and balance to the overall composition.

Congratulations for placing among the top ten, and thank you for submitting this wonderful image into the contest!

I love Art Deco and this amazing picture reminds me of the stunning Art Deco imagery found in the groundbreaking silent movie "Metropolis". I love how the lines intersect with the central figure.. The texture of the wall and the moldings on the bottom right and left hand corners of the composition add greatly to the Art Deco feel. All in all, an excellent example of what one can do with mere shadows on a wall!

This image makes me think of the song "Walk Like an Egyptian" by the 1980s group The Bangles. I could not help but laugh when I saw it. I love how you used the low-lying sunlight to create a memorable family photo. You must have enjoyed your holiday trip greatly! Thanks for entering the contest!

It may not occur to many people that glass can create some of the most interesting shadows because of its ability to refract light. This in turn makes for some very interesting abstract creations. The photographer of this image obviously realized that and made the best use of it. I have no idea what the source of this shadow looks like, but what it created is extraordinary!

Congratulations for placing among the top ten, and thank you for submitting this wonderful image into the contest!

I thought this was a an incredible opportunity to capture one of the rare moments in nature in a most unique way; tree shadows! I never knew you could capture a solar eclipse in any way other than directly or through a specially made pinhole setup. It never occurred to me that it was possible to use tree shadows as a filter to capture a solar eclipse! Great find and thank you for submitting this interesting image in my contest!

There were many excellent images submitted into my contest (with way too many of them off brief for showing the source of their shadows), but this photo perfectly suits the brief in every way possible. From the moment I first saw this image, I wondered how on earth the photographer was able to capture the vertical and horizontal lines on the girl's body in such a way that allowed her to stand out from the background lines! As I looked more closely at the image, I saw a perfect composition where every element was balanced. The photographer used sharp-contrasting monotone to further accent the elements in the composition. Truly a marvelous work to behold!

Congratulations on winning first place, and thank you for submitting this wonderful image into the contest. Your place among the top ten is well deserved!

Meet the judge

This image had to be among my top ten because of it's beautiful abstract simplicity and the fact that it was created from nothing more than a shadow of louvered blinds unto a bathtub! At first I thought it was a flowing piece of satiny material rippling in a breeze.. It was instead a well composed image of a beautiful shadow. This is one example of why I love shadow photography so much.

Congratulations for your placement among the top ten and thank you for submitting this wonderful image into the contest!

I have always been interested in shadow play, and from the first time I first picked up the camera as a hobby, I've been exploring the subject. I found that the use of shadows in photos can be a wonderfully creative outlet. I'd like you to look at them and find a way to create a work of abstract art. Please keep the source of your shadow out of view; I want to see what you can do with just a shadow for your subject. Good luck and have fun!

I love long shadows created by a setting (or rising) sun. This image is an excellent example of using the low sun to create an a fascinating visual out of the ordinary. The composition is fantastic and I love the way the camels' legs kind of create a half circle on the bottom half of the picture. The photographer saw an opportunity for a brilliant "Kodak" moment, and was lucky to have the camera handy to record it.

Congratulations for placing among the top ten, and thank you for submitting this wonderful image into the contest!

This image immediately captured my attention for its composition, texture and the ability to create a story in my head with shadows alone. Where are these sisters going? Who is leading; little sister or big sister? I love the way this image has been processed to show depth and texture.; the stair rail looks almost three dimensional as it wraps around the corner of the landing. The placement of the sisters' shadows couldn't be more perfect for this composition.
