This almost surreal image immediately intrigued me. It's a simple composition with subtle but effective lighting, yet it sparks the imagination. I'm asking myself, "What's the story here?" Who is this sharply dressed person? What's going on with the ship sailing off into the distance? A nice idea, well executed.

If photography is all about the light, then this image captures it perfectly. The strong light that you get after a storm has passed adds drama to any scene. This panoramic view featuring a veteran ocean liner is beautifully lit, sharp, and nicely composed. For me, it would benefit from a little bit more space at the top and bottom.

Alternative viewpoints of familiar subjects are always a surefire way of adding interest to any image, and this birds-eye perspective does just that. The sediment being stirred up by the propellors adds contrast and colour, and the low raking light adds further depth to the scene.

**This contest is open to photographers ranked between 1 and 250 in this week’s Leaderboard.** A contest category that always leaves us in awe of the creations that roam our seas. Hulking beasts that somehow float, and which carry our goods and our people, protect territorial waters, fish for food, and research the state of our oceans and its inhabitants. Ships are bigger than boats, and are sea-going and capable of carrying significant loads. Images can be of either exteriors or interiors of ships, but with the interiors you may need to provide some information with the image, so that you don’t find yourself not-on-briefed.
