Ships and Boats

I love this ‘opportunist’ shot of the nicely side-lit container ship crisply set against the city lights. The composition and exposure are spot on, with the highlights, which are all too easy to burn out, well preserved. If the ship had been underway and not anchored it would have required a much higher ISO to get the same effect and keep the ship sharp, resulting in a far noisier image.

I really like what I assume is some heavy post-production work done to this image that gives it such impact, making it almost surreal. The glowing golden colour and strong vignetting suit the subject matter well and really bring it to life.

Of the many splendid old wooden boat and wreck images entered into this competition this one appealed to me the most. I particularly admire the painterly effect and appreciate the looser composition, which has been used to good effect, showing off of the moody sky, beach and reflections.

**This contest is open to photographers ranked 1001+ in this week’s Leaderboard.** The largest vessels that sail our seas are ships. Larger than boats (a boat being, by one definition, small enough to be carried on a ship) they haul our cargo, protect our territories, carry sightseers from luxury port to luxury port, and much more besides. Images of the whole or any part of a ship, inside or out, are welcomed, and let’s not worry too much about where the crossover between boat and ship occurs, but the emphasis in this contest is certainly on larger vessels.
