Small Spaces

The colours really sing out and the oval is perfect. This is a very well seen image and although taken in the moment its is beautifully considered with its formal arrangements. The blue on the persons jacket matches perfectly with that of the main oval and this really adds to the image. Although we look through a tunnel it seems very flat given the nature of the spheres. A really well seen and executed photograph.

Many similar images were put into this competition but this one really stood out for me. The higher camera angle above the peoples head really adds a sense of space or the lack of and it's the expressions on the faces at the front of the image that really make this photograph stand out. The photographer has not over lightened the faces which is a good point as it makes us the viewer look closer and the expression on the face at the front is stunning..

technically this is not a small space in fact it is a huge interior. But churches hold an almost mythical perception regarding space. They always look or seem larger on the inside and they do something very important. Traditionally they were about community and about power and awe. I can imagine this person in front of the alter feeling very small indeed. I can only imagine what people from previous generations must have felt coming from their very small spaces to see this sheer scale and power.

The plane really makes this image and presents us with a different way to look and read this photograph. We the viewer stand small within this tunnel like space and those in the plane sit within a very small and tight space whist looking out onto the vast open skies. I love the use of angles and timing of the image. Very strong indeed.
