Wow, just wow, were my thoughts when I spotted this entry. I can't think of anything other than speed when I look at this. The composition is brilliant, as your eyes are just drawn through the image and the trains add even more dynamic and colour. A zoom burst is a great technique when done well, and in this example it's perfect for the competition brief. It's also a good example of how to add speed to a subject with creative innovation.
I've picked this image out for a comment as I think it's got more potential. I love the speed elements that are captured, but the composition is what has let it down. The second runner would have been better cropped out of the shot, and then all the attention would have been on the girl in the black top.
This image is so simple, and yet it's also so perfect. The panning is really well executed with the centre of the car being nice and sharp. The fact that the front and back show movement, actually helps give this image life. The blurred background is a clean canvas that makes the car stand out really well. I also like the little glint of sun on the front of the car.
This is certainly a great shot that shows speed, but sometimes that speed element is lost if you use too fast a shutter speed. It's a brilliant action shot, but speed is a different thing, as some wing movement and more background blur would have made it suit the competition brief more. Well done though - brilliant shot!
I chose this image as it's a good example of how you don't always have to have a pin sharp shot. At 1/25th second, it's hard to get anything sharp, yet the cyclist has enough detail at various points to make it work. There is so much speed in this image, created by the panning and slow shutter speed selection.
This image is quite impressive and I'd suggest it's as much a form of art as it is a photograph. This is a clever interpretation of the brief for speed, as it has plenty of that. There's clearly a bit of post capture editing gone into this shot, but it's been done very well. The shapes and blur all work very well together, but the in focus window behind the running mans legs are what really make all the blurring work best. Very clever, and great work.
Not only does this image show speed, it also captures the thrill and enjoyment that it can bring. The smile on this skateboarders face is really eye-catching and the movement created by travelling alongside him to get the shot, get you really close to the action. Using another method of transport to run alongside the subject is perfect for capturing speed, as you can both match the pace. This gives you more time to capture images, and ensures a blurred background at faster shutter speeds if required
There's so many good things to say about this image, so where do I start!? First of all, the panning is spot on. I'd normally say that 1/125 would be too fast, but it has worked really well in this photo. I love the cross frame composition that adds to the movement. The colours are vivid, and make the image stand out, but most of all it shouts out speed, and that was the brief! Well done.
This is an image that I really liked, as it shows a different perspective on speed. The speed subject is effectively invisible, but the lighting trails do all the work. It's a lovely location with the old tunnel and vegetation, and the wet road helps to enhance that colour. A clever image that deserved a mention.
I like images that stand out, and this one was certainly close to making my top 10. The ladies red hair is beautiful, and the composition against the speeding train is very well thought through. The colours are enhanced by the train, especially the colour section that was passing in front of the lady.
As this image was taken at 1/250th second, I'm assuming there's some post capture editing taken place, but I don't mind that, if it's done well. This is a good example of making it work, as the motion in the images really backs up the speed brief. I also like the square crop as it's different and the split between the water and the sky adds so much to this image.
I love this image for so many reasons. Most importantly, it has so much sense of speed in it thanks to great panning. The expression on the girls face is brilliant and really makes you feel part of this image. Her pose with hand out for stabilisation adds another dimension and the snow being thrown up at the front adds yet another. It makes me want to go out and grab a sledge! Awesome work, and deserved winning shot!
Although this image didn't make the top 10, it was very close. There's a lot of colour and movement in the shot, which makes it very eye-catching. The expression on the girls face means that you know she is having a great time, and that makes the image a lot more appealing. The speed elements are enhanced by the expression and background blur.
