Proof that you don’t need a high-end camera to take great photos! The subject’s red wetsuit contrasts against the water’s stunning range of blue tones. The frozen froth is a highlight and one that’s made possible thanks to the fast aperture.

A fantastic image that would have placed much higher; however, we do not accept entries with watermarks. The tones in this image are blended together beautifully within the shallow depth of field and the subject has been captured crisply, while retaining movement in the front wheel.

This image is a perfect demonstration of how to convey movement when photographing motorsport. The 1/500sec shutter speed is fast enough to freeze the riders, but slow enough to retain a sense of motion in the faster moving wheels and flying particles of dirt. The vibrant liveries pop against the drab background, ensuring the eye is drawn immediately to the subject.

Petra Kvitova fights to turn the tide against Johanna Konta on Wimbledon’s centre court. The light falls upon the Czech tennis star’s anguished face and taught muscles, conveying a clear sense of desperation. Petra’s plight has been frozen with a super-fast shutter speed, while her body and racket are positioned parallel with the baseline, which is a compositional boon.

The wider composition of this photograph places a lone skier on the picturesque inclines of Wrangell-St Elias national park and preserve. Shooting towards the light has captured the dramatic shadows sweeping across the slopes, while clearly defining the small subject as a dark silhouette.

Meet the expert judge

Thruxton’s waist-high barriers mean it’s a great circuit to shoot from the crowd. This tack-sharp pan at 1/320sec is impressive enough, but timing the shot so the subject is perfectly parallel with the camera and to position a blurred Pirelli sign within the frame is quite simply masterful.
