This shot for me epitomises the start of spring; a young chick discovering the world but unable to escape the harsh reality that winter isn't quite yet over. As many wildlife photographers know, being quick enough to capture this young nimble chick in sharp focus is quite a challenge. Using a long focal length of 400mm has enabled the photographer to keep their distance to avoid scaring the chick off in the opposite direction. This has also compressed the perspective to give a nice shallow depth of field to blur the background into soft focus and softens the snowflakes giving them a twinkling bokeh effect. The composition works well, the photographer has filled the frame with their subject revealing plenty of detail in the chicks coat. A fantastic action shot with a magical feel, well done!
