Starry Nights

June 2024

Great mountain scape, great sky, and appreciate the property in the centre of the shot being lit up by its internal lighting. It sets the view off perfectly. The F1.4 , 35mm lens by Canon is a great lens and has performed brilliantly here.

There is a lot to be said for positioning the focus of your image in the dead centre of the shot. It works a treat with this image. The Hoo Doo gives it a great anchor, even with its shape too. The person shining their torch light also is additional interest. All helps to then focus your attention onto the night sky, which is just fantastic.

This image made it into my top 10 because of the glorious Aurora of course, but also because of the little human figures who were clearly there enjoying the evening themselves perhaps with their cameras too. I can see motion blur with one of the figures, which I actually don't mind. We all know exposures are long for these shots.

One for the history books really, as the tree being the Sycamore Gap tree, this image shows what a major icon this tree was. I have shot there myself and it was a special place for any photographer. this is a fab shot.

The winning image would have to of course be shot in Iceland. Nature at its best. The Aurora in this image has as strong a line as I think I've ever seen in a northern lights image. Lovely positioning above the water. With balance coming from the hill on the left. Superb colouring and electricity.

I always enjoy looking at images which show a place where I have visited / photographed myself. This is one of them. The image feels a little AI if I am totally honest, just because of the radical lines, and the colour and clarity of the lifeboat building. But I can't help but love it.

Simply shot, the dead tree stump points your eye beautifully into the night sky which is full of stars. The end of the tree being the centre of the image. The tree almost taking the shape of an arrow. Nothing wrong with this shot at all.

Again, I really love the balance shown in this image. How the lone tree interrupts the horizon, but is surrounded above by the Milky Way Galaxy. The wire fence leads your eye towards the tree. Impressed by the number of images this has taken, and staying there all night to get the shots. Not having wind in Wales maybe one too many expectations, but a really great effort.

Mountains, a waterfall and the Milky Way, taken in a strikingly clear evening which looks very comfortable to the eye. What more could anybody ask for for this brief. Taken in Scotland, it makes me want to go visit at night. What an experience the photographer had and it must be very gratifying to have achieved this shot.

Adding people to any landscape has its place, especially when the main part of the image is the sky. It adds scale. I like this image as it shows a social occasion under the starry sky. The hot yellow, red and orange colours balance well against the blue sky.

The clarity with this image is great. I think the snow really helps. The Aurora is almost filling the frame, and this time the water in the lake is almost still for those very important reflections to be still. A great shot, a great moment caught.

Photography has the unique ability to showcase the night sky, and its celestial bodies, in a way that the naked eye just can’t manage. Through a combination of long shutter speed and high ISO, the stars, planets, moon and aurora come alive, and give us an all important reminder of our place in the Universe.

Peaceful indeed. Utter calm and tranquility. Shot in the early evening has helped to give this a silky smooth feel with a perfect glass lake. Shooting what you come across whilst on your way somewhere else sometimes really pays off, and it really has done here.

Wanted to comment on this shot, as using car lights across a distant landscape like this feels special. Having height helps show the road criss crossing the landscape. The stars feel secondary so perhaps not hitting the brief 100%, but a lovely shot.

Lovely story, and a great evening shot making the motorhome the 'star' of the image. Crystal clear image, and the blues really are electric. Southern Spain has a certain light in the evening which this image captures. It needs the light on in the campervan.
