There is a lot to be said for positioning the focus of your image in the dead centre of the shot. It works a treat with this image. The Hoo Doo gives it a great anchor, even with its shape too. The person shining their torch light also is additional interest. All helps to then focus your attention onto the night sky, which is just fantastic.
This image made it into my top 10 because of the glorious Aurora of course, but also because of the little human figures who were clearly there enjoying the evening themselves perhaps with their cameras too. I can see motion blur with one of the figures, which I actually don't mind. We all know exposures are long for these shots.
The winning image would have to of course be shot in Iceland. Nature at its best. The Aurora in this image has as strong a line as I think I've ever seen in a northern lights image. Lovely positioning above the water. With balance coming from the hill on the left. Superb colouring and electricity.

Again, I really love the balance shown in this image. How the lone tree interrupts the horizon, but is surrounded above by the Milky Way Galaxy. The wire fence leads your eye towards the tree. Impressed by the number of images this has taken, and staying there all night to get the shots. Not having wind in Wales maybe one too many expectations, but a really great effort.
Mountains, a waterfall and the Milky Way, taken in a strikingly clear evening which looks very comfortable to the eye. What more could anybody ask for for this brief. Taken in Scotland, it makes me want to go visit at night. What an experience the photographer had and it must be very gratifying to have achieved this shot.

Photography has the unique ability to showcase the night sky, and its celestial bodies, in a way that the naked eye just can’t manage. Through a combination of long shutter speed and high ISO, the stars, planets, moon and aurora come alive, and give us an all important reminder of our place in the Universe.
