Statues and monuments

March 2026

I adore how eye catching this is. The brilliance of the blue and the yellow of the light, tree and figure is beautifully contrasted, and of course complementary. I love how bold the centre composition is, as is the strong line through the centre. Overall, I love how absurd this - confidently weird. Congratulations.

What a hauntingly beautiful image. The composition brings the statues to live, and the perspective adds storytelling impact to the scene. The toning brings out the whites in the sculptures and the drama in the sky, as well as framing the scene beautifully with light and shade. I find it a very emotional image, with a stillness that gives time to reflect. Congratulations.

I love how different this image is. The attention to detail in the statue gives a focus on texture, repetition, and emphasises the similarity of form within the ear and the hair, giving a feeling of fluid movement within the stone. I love the gentle toning and the monochromatic colour palette. Congratulations.

Oh, I love this image. The composition is wonderful - giving us the environmental context of a city celebrating the person represented by the statue. The flowers, fresh and less fresh, are a lovely story detail. Overall, I love the exposure, representing the statue as a silhouette which emphasises the form of the frozen movement. The composition of the lampost in the distance is just one the elements that feels confidently intentional. Congratulations.

Such a moving image which stands out for its emotional impact as well as its visual impact. The composition juxtaposes the scale of the represented conflict, with the towering impact on one person. The contrast of the weehchair and the legs is poignant, as is the salute, emphasised by the black and white toning. It's a frame full of story, and the steps at the bottom of the frame give an extra layer of meaning. Congratulations

There are many captures of this particular statue and this one caught my eye for its ethereal, sensitive, and thoughtful treatment. the movement of the water , clouds and wind turbines of course contrasts with the absolute stillness of the statue. Congratulations.

Well, this is a particularly famous monument, and I love the drama in this image. I do appreciate the dramatic composition with the white clouds allowing the the familiar outline to take centre stage in terms of form; the exposure expertly revealing light and shade in the statue. I particularly appreciate the inclusion of the people at the base, giving a wonderful contrast of scale. Congratulations.

What an eye-catching frame! The toning brings out the light and colour in the sculpture so well, giving it so much drama. The warmth is beautiful and works to give an almost cosy feel which contrasts with the seeming peril in the action. It's a frame that very much brings the scene to life.

Wow - what a composition. I love the bold centering and the scale here. F8 gives us plenty of documentary detail. Framing the scene with a circle of people at the bottom works so well to tell the story of the scene. I appreciate the use of colour in honestly representing a crowd of people, the careful inclusion of the flag, and the intentional straightening of the architectural lines. I love how it looks like a painting.

This is a standout image for me. l love the dramatic pop of the sign, its position over the clock, the leading lines of both form and light, and the relatively late reading of the statue, revealed by highlights. I love how it appears to look at the sign. The longer we linger on a frame in terms of its readability the more time there is for the emotional impact to build, and I find that works will the juxtaposition of these words and a statue. I found myself googling who the statue was in case there was a layer there I wasn't catching - for anyone else interested, its St John Betjeman. Congratulations.

What a beautiful appreciation of texture and form, bringing the sensory nature of the stone to life. The vertical lines in the background contrast nicely with the curves in the statue. The frame filling composition is immersive and intimate. Congratulations.

Statues - carved or cast figures of people or animals, especially ones that are life-size or larger - and monuments - statues, buildings, or other structures erected to commemorate a notable person or event - adorn our town and city centres, our village squares, our mueums, and very occasionally our beaches (see above!) They often immortalise the past, and the characters and actions that formed it, and there is ever increasing scrutiny on some of the subjects of these statues and monuments, with their lives being reassessed in the light of modern day perspectives and morality.

What an incredibly moving image. I appreciate the clean, gentle and slightly distant point of view. The exposure brings out the snow and leaves the sculpture someone abstract. The composition feels hopeful, with brightness taking up as much of the frame as darkness. Congratulations.

Oh, this is lovely. I appreciate the thoughtful toning which adds an unreal and painterly feel to the scene. Strangely, it makes the statue feel all the more human. I find the symmetry pleasing but do wish, for me, that it was absolutely centred. A beautiful image. Congratulations.

I do love an image of people looking at and photographing things. The slow shutter speed emphasises the stillness of the statue and gives us just a touch of pleasing softness amongst the crowd. I love the exposure on the people, especially the highlights on their clothes contrasting with the white of the statue.
