Steps, Stairs and Escalators

A great winning image, this view captures a couple walking up the steps on the right, and a couple who are at the top in the shadows on the left. Striking a perfect balance. I love the clouds, shadows, and buildings either side. The main couple make this shot work so well, as they are not walking up the central stairs.

An electric blue, slow exposure going up an escalator. This image leaves me with more questions than answers, but I like that about it. Nicely framed and balanced, how was it taken? Was the camera travelling up the escalator , or stationary? I think stationary, but the escalator was travelling.

When do we ever see the underneath of random people's feet? The only time is whilst looking up at a glass walkway or steps like this image. Intriguing view, lovely shadows, and graphic nature. With a shutter speed of 1/8000th of a second, the feet are frozen.

**This contest is open to photographers ranked 1001+ in this week’s Leaderboard.** Whether spiral, straight, wooden or metal‚ architects of all eras have found creative and pleasing ways to weave steps and stairs into their buildings. Escalators might offer a little less opportunity for design flair, but as photographic subjects they all share the same visual opportunities - an array of patterns, repetitions, and leading lines that are impossible to ignore.
