The Aesthetics of Backlighting

Here again, relevance of the backlight which draws and reinforces the presence of the characters. Time stands still around this family of monkeys who do not relax their vigilance despite the tranquility of the end of the day, and a dramatic tension emerges from this apparent immobility.

Here is a magnificent example of the use of backlighting on a landscape. While reinforcing the silhouette rich in details of the foreground, it allows the depth of the background to decline in a relief in several subtle layers. The hazy, monochrome texture adds even more to the mysterious, even theatrical dimension of this achievement, which recalls some pictorial works by the great masters of Italian Renaissance painting.

What silent complicity lets us imagine these three characters contemplating an improbable sunset, dreaming of multiple ideal destinations, beyond the railway tracks they overlook, seated in balance on a metal beam... A scene of urban poetry which could be part of a major cinematographic work.

The contrasts played to the fullest in this remarkable photo. Both the use of black and white which reinforces the recommended dramaturgy of the situation, the backlighting which accentuates the play of light and makes it possible to focus more on the subject, and finally the contrasting action itself of the benevolent hand which comforts and quenches the thirst of the fighter who has just expressed his powerful combativeness. Its very upright and immobile position, frozen, facing what could be an uncertain future, reinforced by the distant presence of industrial structures in the background of the decor and its thought, is very significant of current, environmental and philosophical questions, on direction of humanity. A very beautiful achievement, all in finesse, which can be contemplated at leisure.

It is an absolute delight generated by this play of light which energizes the subtle colors of the two subjects on display. A fine example of backlighting which marvelously magnifies each contour with a luminous border, and the color palettes of deep and delicate shades.

This is an image that inspires a lot of serenity, due to its Asian exoticism underpinned by the peaceful presence of Buddhist monks, and by this warm end-of-day atmosphere to which the shade of large trees and umbrellas brings a welcome freshness.

This very refined composition, which borders on abstraction, makes wonderful use of the springs of the backlight. The solitary presence of the character, as frozen as the elements that surround him, invites a contemplative immersion in which time stops happily.
