Towers, turrets and minarets

April 2026

This image has bounced around in my top 3 for a while, I think you have framed it perfectly using the rocks in the foreground to anchor the viewers eyes and lead them to the lighthouse.

Colours are great and has really captured the feeling of the area, that warm sunlight just highlighting the edges of the lighthouse really helps it pop and makes it the focal point of the image.

This image captures the rugged landscape of The Republic of Ireland beautifully!

It's good to see someone leaning into the blue hour over the typical bright sunrise images too, gives a totally different perspective of the landscape!

I like how you have framed the image, sticking the lighthouse on the rule of thirds lines creates a really impactful shot and the use of a slow shutter speed really helps that sea get buttery smooth!

Congratulations on your winning image.

I chose this as I love the treatment you have applied to the image, gives it a really strong graphic element which draws the eye in and almost looks like a still from a movie.

The slow shutter speed I think works brilliantly, smoothing out the Thames and adding that perfect bit of movement in the sky too.

This is a beautiful image which you have captured at the most perfect time of day!

The colours work beautifully together and the warm oranges of the mosque contrast really well with those deep purples throughout the image.

If I had one slight change it I would want to see a little less water and a bit more sky just to balance the image.

Something about the desolation of this image really makes it stand out for me.

That early morning fog adds a layer to the image and your colour treatment just adds to the remoteness of the tower which stands out really well against the backdrop.

There is quite a bit of noise throughout the image, but I think in this case, it actually adds to the mood of the image.

This is a really impactful image, your treatment makes it really stand out and I would love to see a large scale print of this!

I think the contrast across the image really adds to that punchy feel and you've handled the shadows really well, they're dark enough to add impact but no details are lost so well done.

It's great to see drone photography making it's way into the competition and this is a great example of how drones can be used to capture things which we can't achieve with traditional photography.

I think your framing is great, sticking the mosque right at the front of the frame gives it a really imposing position in the image and leads the viewers eye across Istanbul.

This is a beautiful capture, really transports the viewers to your viewpoint and can almost hear the sites and sounds of the temple through your photograph.

You picked a great time to photograph and the colours you have captured are fantastic against the dark shadows of the temple.

This is a great take on the brief and I think the creativity deserves credit!

Love the sharpness in the image and that slight drop focus adds a lot of realism to the image which makes you look twice to see if it actually a sandcastle.

Contrast is handled well across the image and good use of highlights and shadows too.

This image really stands out to me and without reading your caption I would have thought you were looking up at skyscrapers!

Kudos for trying something different and the angle you have captured is great. The layout and avoiding anything converging makes for a fantastic image to look at.

There's no denying this is a beautiful image and very close to being in my top 10,.

The colours throughout the image are great, the warmth coming from inside the building balanced against that blue sky looks great.

I think you have a little too much floor and would like to see either a 16x9 crop or an option with a bit more sky included but apart from the it's a great shot!

This image was in and out of my top 10!

Hard to deny it's a really impactful image but for me the sky has just gone a little too far to seem real and a few little artifacts showing the original sky, tone a down a little bit and I think you will have a really nice image!

A late addition to my top 10 but one I'm glad it in there!

Your framing for this is absolutely fantastic fits every kind of rule of thirds/Fibonacci spiral you want to throw at it and looks for it!

I think the use of black and white is great and that little motion blur of the train really makes the photo!

A great example of the best camera is the one you have in your pocket!

Fantastic phone shot and a great take on the brief too, definitely thinking a little bit outside the box!

I think putting this is black and white was a great choice and your use of contrast and the shadows really do draw the viewers eye in to a really punchy, fresh image!

The colours in this image are beautiful and a great example of how to balance the natural light of the blue hour with interior lights!

I really like how you've used the leaves to frame the building and the different crop works perfectly for the subject too.

These sky-reaching edifices were built with a clear function in mind – defense of a building or settlement, and calling the community to prayer. As such they exist within a context, often nestled within a larger building, a fort or castle, or a religious building. Images might focus just on the tower, set against the sky behind, or show the fuller scene, and perhaps bringing in the modern day setting within which they exist.
