Trains, Railways & Stations

September 2023

I like all of the geometric detail in this photograph. There are so many different lines and shapes that guide the eye around the image, but the train also serves as a visual anchor. I appreciate that the train happens to be yellow, too, a color that complements the evening glow of the sky. Well done!

I love the juxtaposition here between the train and the beach huts, and the way the photographer’s perspective makes it look like the train is almost gliding over the roofs. I appreciate the bright, playful color palette as well. Well done!

This was certainly unexpected – what a fascinating place! I love seeing how all of the different people are interacting with the abandoned trains, and the way the image guides the viewer’s eye through the frame to see all of these interactions. Great use of leading lines and choice of unique subject matter.

Goodness gracious – looks like a wild ride! This was a fun photo to come across and also a curious one; how does a train successfully navigate so many sharp angles, twists and turns? Great job with perspective and leading lines here, too.

I love the attention to detail here, and that two pairs of feet are the only indication of human presence on this otherwise empty late-night train. The stylish shoes add an element of fun and make me more curious about who the passengers are, as well. Great job with framing and leading lines and using these as a narrative device.

This photograph is so striking and mysterious! I really love the color palette and the moodiness it creates. The sky, architecture, and overall landscape all take on a melancholy blue tone, which contrasts significantly with the yellow roof of the train, a streak of brightness in the gloom. Great job calling attention to this through the way you’ve framed the image, and nice job waiting for the right moment of the train’s crossing to capture.

Wonderful use of long exposure here! I love how you’ve captured the motion of the train and how its curvature mirrors that of the rolling, snowy hills in the background. The simple color palette is particularly effective and adds to the strikingness of the image, as well. Great job!

Great job with composition here. I love the layers of this image, and that you’ve captured two different kinds of industry in the same frame. The soft morning light, fog, and blue sky also give the image a pastoral quality, which contrasts nicely with the train and cooling towers depicted.

Beautiful image. The interplay of light, shadow, and fog creates a moody photograph with a heightened sense of drama and mystery; I feel like I’m looking at a film still. I also appreciate seeing the third man’s face framed by the train; I didn’t notice this detail at first but it was a nice surprise. Well done!

Rail networks criss-cross our nations, and are a perennial favourite of photographers. In this contest any imagery of trains, the infrastructure that carries and supports them, and the stations where they pick up and deposit their loads are welcomed. We’re celebrating both the old and the new, the technology and the people that make this form of transport so important still, and perhaps poised to be even more so again, as we seek more environmentally sustainable ways than the car and the plane to get us and our goods around.

This is such a striking photograph! I love seeing the intricate webs of overhead lines and tracks. The scene is overwhelmingly busy and gives a good sense of how complex the rail system is – all without ever depicting a train. Great job with composition and great selection of subject matter.

What a fun moment! I love that you can see multiple people leaning out of the train to take photographs, and that one of them is in the foreground to help frame the scene. Great job using the train’s curvature to guide the eye through the image, too.

Beautiful image – and one that makes me a bit nervous to look at! The train looks like it is precariously poised above the water with no guardrails to protect it on its journey. Great job creating a sense of suspense here, as well as helping diffuse it with the serene color palette. Well done!

This is such a striking photograph! I have never seen a train decorated in this way, nor one that visually impacts its surrounding environment so much. Great job with exposure and capturing the multi-colored lights as they illuminate the surrounding landscape and water. I also appreciate the layering here and seeing the boats in the foreground. Well done!
