Great contest!

This shot transports everything I associate with being in an artifical man-made underground, as a contrast to cleaned up train stations and tunnels that connect those. the artificial lighting comes perfect in this shot. This place is sticky, dirty and wet and I am sure it has a major psychological effect to be down here. Looking at it, I can almost smell the humidity and the dirt. And in this shot, we don't even see a light at the end. This is a perfect playground for a horror movie. First aid won't help the protagonists down here. Make sure you know your way out of this scene! Great shot and very well executed!

I've seen this location (St Kings Cross, London) a lot in the contest submissions, but this one clearly stands out from the others. For one, there are no pedestrians passing by, but much more impressive is the way the photographer included the reflection of this tunnel into the image, to create this beautiful symmetrical view. A qiet original approach to a much photographed subject for sure! Good job, and technically well executed!

What did strike me first in this shot is the combination of the colors, but that's not all. The 15mm fisheye effect works perfectly here, connecting all lines in a central spot right in the middle of the image. The white light line above correlates very well with the white interrupted line on the floor, that keeps people from steping to close to an incoming train, even underlines it. Love both here, colors & composition. Very well done!

Well. I've been fighting with myself to put this on the awarded list. But I am going to explain why I finally did. It fits the brief, no doubt, but the strong distortion to the left does not make me very happy at first sight. The people standing in the background do not make me happy as well. But since I am a sucker for correlating lines and colors, this image kind of "accidentally" won me over. I can't help but notice that we find the colors of the poster to the left as well in the paint of the roof construction of this tunnel and the brick wall. The state of distortion of the poster frame we find again as well, in the form of the tunnel and the small window atop. And, even more surprising, we find pieces of the yellow & rose color within in the moving crowd. I am almost sure all this happened accidentally, so I am not going to say well done. But, you did catch my eye somehow...

This hand-held long exposure shot is quite impressive and and recreates the tunnel as an abstract subject. The result sucks the viewer into the image and we become the moving train, speeding along the tracks. I would also like to see the color version of this image if possible, although I think black & white suits it perfectly already (I am just curious!). This shot has been well executed, most images of tunnels here that try to transport movement are far away from this perfection. Outstanding work!

Yes, finally, amongst all the train stations, we get to see something that comes close to a secret passage. Black & white suits the scene very well. The contrast is faded a bit too much for my taste, but given the subject, I am willing to turn one blind eye to this matter. Many thanks to the photographer for sharing this really rare view with the audience!

I love the simplicity of this image, underlined by the depth of the field and perfect symmetry. The overall shiny surface and the perfect lightning play very well together and give the scene a surreal touch. It reminds of the sterility of surgical tools. Although this is not the typical tunnel shot I expected, this image instantly caught my attention when I started to go through all submissions. Very well done!

A tunnel of light within a tunnel of darkness... I tried not to be fascinated too much, but failed completely in that endeavour. This had to be my number one! There is absolutely nothing that I don't like about this image. While the image would be also on brief without the light installation, the later comes as a surprising extra. I even like to look at the small details, the little threads of light spreading on the tracks. I very much wonder how long it took to get this done so well. Was it a one-shot thing or did it need many shots? I'd say enlighten me on this, but you've done that perfectly on another level already. A few more photographers tried this approach in this contest, but none convinced me like this. I wonder why the crowd made a pass on loving this one so much as well. Great shot, absolutely outstanding work!

I like this shot a lot, the photographer has not been tempted by the natural symmetry of the subject, but chose a very own angle to lead us into this tunnel. These kind of shots always make me wonder what is waiting behind the corner. I love how the light projects a different symmetry onto the tunnel wall, that the photographer caught perfectly from this angle. I wish there was some post-processing information on this shot, I have to guess that a lot of blue toning was involved here, which gives the scene a bit of an artificial approach. Anyway, great shot, well done!

Here we look at a very well done HDR composition of three shots, that perfectly displays the details of this tunnelview. Since there is not much light in this tunnel, a normal photograph would have lost a lot of those details I guess. Of course the wide-angle approach fits perfectly to the subject, underlining the tunnel-feeling. The fact that there is no light at the end of the tunnel makes the viewer wonder if he will ever get out and see daylight again. This tunnel has to be a nightmare for any claustrophobic person. Well done!

Connecting shores, valleys and buildings, man has spared no effort to dig and drill tunnels into the earth. Secret passages, public transport, cargo or highway to another country, tunnels are the most direct connections, taking the morphology of a landscape out of the game. While the claustrophobic fear to enter, the optimist will always see the light at the end of the tunnel. Take your lens underground!

This is a great black & white interpretation and very well on brief for the contest. It's quite refreshing to see another perspective here, not into the tunnel, but out of it, still keeping the symmetry of the tunnel on the outside as well and making the tunnel a frame for it, very original. The focal length of 27 mm fits the shot very well and the depth of field has been well executed to suit the whole scene. The post-processing remains unknown, but gives a HDR flair to the image. Very well done!

A very well done symmetrical tunnel shot. I like a lot that the photographer picked this position and did not wander any further, becaue the little tree on the poster on the left corresponds to the green of the tunnel perfectly and makes it a more noticable shot. The image has been well executed in sharpness and color, I add an extra point for originality for the tree poster. Well done!

I like a lot how the reflections slighty distort the persons shape, it's almost looking like we see different people here, while we are well aware that we only have one person in the picture. Black & white fits the subject quite well. Personally, I would have gone for a slightly slower shutter speed (and ask the person to stand still for that), to white out the exit of the tunnel and give more detail to the interior, as well as to the second level of reflection of the person. Of course you can achieve the same effect with post processing the image a bit.

I have never been a fan of adding people to a scene, unless they are supposed to be the main subject. But in this case, the little boy in his socks adds something, that fits our theme here quite well. The shot is very well executed, with perfect focus & sharpness on the boy, and very well lit. The shallow depth of field lets the tunnel melt into a black hole in the background. This photo transports quite well the feeling that many feel when entering into a tunnel. Very well done!

This image, called "Ghost" absolutely lives up to its title. The location itself, a tunnel of Fountains Abbey, becomes completely unimportant, apart from the fact that we still clearly notice the tunnel & its end here. This hand-held longexposure creates something that feels like a vision. Is it a departure, or a return? This would be a perfect illustration for a report about near death experiences. Well done!

I like this perspective a lot. While tunnels tempt us to create symmetry in pictures, the photographer used the words on the floor as orientation. "No cycling" - I can't resist to say I'd love to see a bike lying around in this tunnel, or a cyclist passing by. The image has been well executed, the 24mm of focal length suits the scene quite well. I also like the slight bluish toning here, as alternative to plain black & white. Very well done!
