This captivating black and white offers a powerful glimpse into the complex social dynamics of Geladas. Caught in a moment of dramatic interaction, the image portrays what appears to be a mixture of play, tension, and communication among the trio. One monkey’s wide-eyed expression and open mouth contrasts beautifully with the others’ close engagement, drawing viewers into the intensity of the moment.

Technically, the photograph is executed well—sharp, well-composed, and rich in detail. The emotional impact is amplified by removing the colour, allowing us to focus on the striking contrasts in fur texture, facial expression, and mood.

This image is a good example of visual storytelling. It highlights the expressive capabilities of primates and their deep, often dramatic, social bonds.

This image is a great lesson in minimalism. The lone penguin, dwarfed by the vast expanse of white, evokes a sense of isolation, resilience, and quiet commitment to what seems like its march toward doom.

Void of colour, the stark contrast draws our focus to the bird’s silhouette and posture—its simple, unwavering presence in a monochrome wilderness is poetically Herzogian.

Would make for an amazing huge print to reflect the effort gone in to obtaining the photo. Congratulations on first place. -PJB

At a guess, I would say it's a Bark scorpion casting its silhouette across the intricate surface of this sunlit leaf. Nature’s negative space working hard here. The photo plays with perception: menace and fragility layered in a single frame.

The image is technically simple but visually striking, using backlighting to highlight both the delicate venation of the leaf and the unmistakable form of the scorpion. It's a quiet kind of tension—still, but not at rest. Gorgeous.

What a beautiful portrait. A Western lowland gorilla in her natural habitat, exactly where she's meant to be. Framed by the dense jungle, the composition balances light and shadow beautifully, showcasing both the gorilla’s form and her environment with elegance. There’s an intimacy here that seems to be reminding us how close and yet how distant we are from the wild. Great light control, lovely soft blacks.

Quite a powerful and haunting photo. The orangutan’s body language, clinging to the bars, conveys a deep, visceral emotion—perhaps longing, or resignation. It is very easy to anthropomorphise a sadness here.

Being black and white it strips away distraction and forces us to confront the raw reality of animals in captivity. It’s a challenging reminder of the line between conservation and zoos for entertainment.

Good visual storytelling here.

So much human emotion could be read in to this! Those moments in wildlife photography make it extra fun. Beak to beak like old friends or new lovers, there's a real visual story going on here.

The soft curves in the background echo the gentle interaction, while the crisp lines of the feathers bring the scene into sharp focus. The black and white palette makes it all the more charming. Love that foot lift!

The bat and flower are equal participants in a quiet ecological ritual, here. The bat’s wings, translucent and veined like delicate leaves, echo the botanical textures of the bloom. Works great in monochrome.

It has that science journal quality, yet there's an undeniable poetry in it too—an invisible thread between pollinator and plant, now made visible with high speed flash.

Tucked into the corner like it owns the place, this little owl stares out with comically intense focus. They're such judgey looking dudes on occasion! The stark composition, with all that empty space, amplifies its presence.

It is minimal but bursting with personality. Small bird in a big frame, holding its ground with perfect, unimpressed poise. Love it!

Meet the expert judge

A gathering of walruses sprawled under an ice halo, their sheer bulk grounded against that soft arctic sky. The photographer catches the moment just right—low angle, wide lens—giving the scene both intimacy and grandeur. Very regal looking! Reminds me a little of a Paul Nicklen frame, where patience and proximity pay off.

Capturing a tern in mid-flight is challenging enough—but freezing it at the exact moment it skims the water’s surface so it is mirrored perfectly in stillness takes more than a bit of practice.

The sharpness in the feathers, the timing of the wingbeat, and the crisp reflection all demand a very fast shutter speed. The moment is caught so precisely it has split the world in two, which works great in monochrome.

This beautifully timed image captures more than motion—it captures personality. The sea lion’s eye meets the viewer with an openness that feels playful and curious, inviting interaction.

Technically, it’s lovely: fast shutter speed freezes each bubble in great detail, and the lighting reveals the texture of its sleek form.

A quiet yet striking moment of connection, good work!

Whilst it is often the colour of the animals on our planet that defines them and wows the viewer, presenting them in black and white has a power of its own. It can focus attention more on their characters, the form of their bodies, and their surrounding habitat. Some colour toning of imagery is fine in this contest, as long as the image remains monotone, and the definition of wildlife excludes any domesticated or farmed animals.

Gorgeous! Wading through the water with calm purpose, this elephant carries the landscape on its back—quite literally. The darkened line of wet skin mirrors the horizon, blurring where animal ends and it's environment begins. There’s a message in that. The planet's largest land mammal moving so gracefully through the water and rain looks very elegant here.

Would've loved to have seen a lower angle to match those horizons.

Gliding over a rippled seabed like a shadow in motion, the hammerhead in this image seems to be mid-hunting behaviour—alert, searching, perfectly in tune with its environment. The textured sand below mimics the shark’s own contours, echoing the fluidity in its movement. Stripping the image of colour has really given the light room to show off here.

This extreme close-up of a damselfly is pure sci-fi. Every tiny detail—those wild bristles, those massive, patterned eyes. Macro work done well should always feels like a glimpse into another world.

The black and white treatment keeps it clean and striking, letting the textures do all the talking. Technically sharp and totally captivating, it’s a reminder of how bizarre and beautiful the tiny things in life really are. Good job!

Fierce tension, captured with razor-sharp timing and intent. The photograph freezes the moment well. Strong side lighting sculpts the lions’ forms, adding depth and drama. There’s intimacy, too. A raw exchange of dominance and connection that always ends abruptly with lion mating. A technical image with real emotional weight.
