This is a great black and white image of a set of wind turbines. Your composition, with the turbines positioned very low in the frame, with a vast expanse of sky above, brings mood and drama to the shot. The key to the success of the image for me is your capture of the light as it highlights the turbines on the left of the frame, with those on the right still visible, but more hidden in the gloom. I have obviously not seen a colour version of this shot, but I think it works very well as a black and white, as colour does not distract from the graphics of the shapes and the mood of the shot. Well done on your top ten placing.

This is a great image which has cleverly captured just the shadow of the sail, cast upon the wall of the windmill. Good composition with the shadow running on a diagonal across the frame, with the window providing interest on the lower part of the image. I may have been tempted to boost the contrast slightly to darken the shadow cast by the sails to add a little more punch and lift the walls from grey, closer to white. It is however a well seen and well composed image which I like a lot. Well done on your to ten placing.

This image may not be an obvious crowd pleaser in a windmills contest, but for me it stood out as a quality image, and something just a little different, whilst still clearly meeting the brief. One thing I like is the naturalness of the image, looking to have captured what was there, nothing added and nothing taken away. The image is well composed, and the elements within the scene all seem a little incongruous, which adds to the appeal. Good control of the lighting, which looks to be quite harsh, as we can see good detail within the shadow areas, and the colouring remains rich. Great work, well done on your top ten placing.

This is a beautiful and image, full of calm and gentle tranquility. The lighting is soft and delicate, and the pale pastel colours of blue, with a hint of pink, look natural. Your composition works well, with the windmill and its reflection positioned on the right third line. Although very small in the frame, I really like the inclusion of the fingerpost on the edge of the outcrop, as it provides a point of interest on the left of the frame, and seems to tell a story and invites us onto the footpaths and beautiful walks around the Broads. A very well photographed and well handled shot, to capture the mood and atmosphere of the early morning landscape. Well done on your second place finish.

The more I looked at this image whilst writing the image reviews, the more I appreciated it, so it gradually rose through the placings to reach the top spot! A very attractive rural scene, superbly captured in the golden light of what looks to be a spring day, with the yellow gorse in bloom in the hedgerow. Great composition, with the line of the rough track inviting the eye into the image to the windmill beyond, which is nicely framed by the trees to the side and the vegetation below. The shadow of the sails on the side of the mill gives another detail and point of interest too. Lovely lighting, with the golden hue of the sun contrasting nicely with the soft purply blue of the sky. A very atmospheric image, superbly captured, full of tranquility and calm. Congratulations on your winning image.

This image is a great example of being in the right place at the right time. I am sure there would have been a good deal of planning and waiting to capture this image, and you did not just roll up on the off chance and capture the scene as a happy accident (if you did, you were very lucky!!). The windmill virtually obliterates the sun, which has allowed you to shoot into the sun and capture the mill in silhouette, and the lovely long shadows cast across the weedy pool in the foreground. These shadows both add interest to the shot, but also act as a strong lead-in line, to draw the eye towards the windmill beyond, which has also been well positioned within the composition. A super image, well done on your top ten placing.

In this contest I would like to see your photos of windmills and wind turbines. Your images could show a traditional windmill which uses the power of the wind for mechanical power, such as those used to turn grinding stones or water pumps. Alternatively you could show modern wind turbines which use the power of the wind to generate electricity. You can show the windmills and turbines either within the landscape or showing close up details. Images can be in colour or black and white. I look forward to seeing your entries.

The drama on display initially drew me to this image, with the gathering storm clouds, the orange of the late sunset, and the giant turbines looming above the town below. I am unsure how much of this image is shot in this single location, and how much is brought together as a composite, but the overall effect of the shot, whether "natural" or heavily adjusted, is very dramatic and works well as a composition as a whole. Your capture of the clouds is especially impressive as they contribute a mood of menace, as well as demontrating the raw beauty of nature. Great work, well done on your top ten placing.

This is a superb black and white landscape image, full of impact with all the elements of a great photograph Focusing, composition, exposure etc are all spot on. The sky is super, with the form of the clouds accentuated by the use of a wide angle lens, which adds a touch of drama to the scene and acts as a lead in to pull the eye into the image. The conversion to black and white has been done very well, with a full range of tones from black through to white, and good contrast. I am not a fan of adding a digital frame to contest images, as for me it tends to detract from the subject rather than add anything, but here it just avoids being too excessive. Great work, congratulations on your third place finish.

This image is all about the lighting and the mood it creates. I am sure there is a fair degree of post-processing on the image, but all the essential elements have been captured, and you have been able to identify how best to complete the image in processing to achieve the best results. I love the limited colour palette of the various shades of brown and gold, and the light picking out the bright white of the sails, to draw the eye directly to the windmill. The pool of light across the golden crops in the foreground is lovely, and prevents the mood of the image becoming too oppressive. Geat work, well done on your top ten placing.
