Winter in black and white

Winter in black and white

February 2020

winner

An interesting conceptual image that makes good use of the abandoned building to create or suggest a story. The exposure and contrast have been handled very well, rendering the horizon and some smaller details visible, but not harsh below the blank sky.

This image transports me to the Lake District in Winter. I love the use of the reeds in the foreground and the reflection. You've handled the contrast extremely well so the trees are visible but the mist is still apparent.

A refreshing change from a smoothed-out view of the sea, the subtle blurring of the waves shows their movement nicely. The moody, dark tones within this image help to convey the cold and threat of the waves.

A wonderfully subtle image with perfect exposure and contrast. The composition is also very well balanced, the top row of trees sits nicely in the frame. The coldness of the day is conveyed and I can picture looking out across the scene.

I love the bold, defiant expression of the cow and the degree of blur in the sleet/snow, it really conveys a sense of winter! Using a wide-angle lens has enabled you to capture the context while making the main subject stand out.

Great choice of location and angle of view, the trees all seem to radiate from the road adding to the image's impact, it could almost be a shot of an explosion site. Perfectly suited to black and white photography.

Excellent exposure, capturing just the right degree of movement in the waves and drama in the sky.
