On the face of it, this is just an ordinary shot of an ordinary street scene. On closer viewing however, the image works on many levels, and gives much for the eye to explore, being quite a complex image (but in a good way). I think what I especially like are the little scenes within the scene overall: the barber and customer; the view in the mirror showing not only the barber and customer, but other characters and the scene behind the photographer; the view up the side of the building of which we can see only a glimpse, left to wonder what lies beyond out of the frame. A candid street shot, full of natural colours, people going about their daily business - all combining for a fascinating shot. Congratulations on your second place finish
There were a number of great images of rabbits and hares in this contest, but this delightful portrait earns a well-deserved top ten placing. Composition for me is spot-on, with the animal to the right of the frame facing in, with a fair amount of negative space surrounding the subject to avoid distraction, but still retaining the look of a natural backdrop rather that a digital cut-out. Exposure is good, being on the lighter side, ensuring no areas of the face are in shadow. I also love how we get light shining through one of the hare's ears, along with all the textural detail in the soft fur. A beautiful wildlife portrait, well done on your top ten placing.
I love the stark simplicity of this beautiful minimalist composition. The long exposure had been used to great effect rather than just being a bit gimmicky, as both the sea and sky are nicely softened to bring a lovely mood of gentleness to the scene. The five decaying posts of the coast defenses have been well positioned in the frame, creating a simple but stunning image. Great work, well done on your top ten placing.
Such a joyous capture, perfectly conveying the innocence of childhood, the bond between young friends and a spontaneous sense of glee and fun. Although the image looks set up and posed to a degree, there is also an element of the candid, as each child looks to be beyond the control of the photographer and in their own world of shared fun. The tones and contrasts of the image are lovely, and despite the movement everything is crisply sharp. The light shining through the blowing hair also adds a sense of movement. I also love the expression of the child on the right; maybe yonger than the others, and looking a little uncertain as to how to behave, but decides to join in the fun anyway. A delightful photo. Congratulations on your winning image.
