This is a very well observed image - the three people ascending the staircase cut off at the chest/waist echoed by the three sculptures - very clever! However, this idea is greatly enhanced by the overall composition - the horizontal lines at the top of the image and the diagonal lines indicating the direction of travel and movement - I really like this photograph and congratulate the photographer on their ability to see the potential and possibilities within the scene.
There were lots of entries including animals and birds and I am sure that many of these will have proved popular with the crowd. I particularly liked this one as the photographer has amalgamated three images to produce this study. However, it was the colours of the background that appealed to me as much as the birds - beautiful tones...
I keep looking at this image...looks like an abandoned building - a desk with open drawers - heating units - three windows (one with blind down...and as my eye wandered around the image I tried to imagine the story and history of this place.....and for this reason and the connection with the brief through the three windows - I have put it in my top ten.
I really like this image - just what are the figures playing at? Looks like it might relate to a wedding - are they the same or different people? So many questions....I tend not to criticise images entered into my contests and this one is perfect but I would like to see the image in plain b/w rather than sepia as the subject to me appears contemporary rather than vintage...
I was looking for 'creative' solutions to this contest....and yes, many of the entries included 3 objects of some kind but its the visual context of this image that interested me when I first saw it.... a partly obscured image of a crane? wallpaper? repeated three times with some overlap. The resulting overall texture appealed to me immediately - a sense of otherworldliness - something happening - not just a simple well composed shot of 3 things like many other entries but this image says something to me beyond these....
This image was close to my top ten - as it includes the elements of creativity I was looking for - the power of the ride really comes through because of the way three images have been combined to make the image - clearly this is an impossible image but it does serve to accentuate the movement and thrill of the ride.
I had no preconceptions when devising this contest - but did look forward to some well composed landscape images. This one is excellent - I love square formats in b/w - I also like to tonal range of this image - if the image was exhibited on a wall - I would expect a substantial border to show the image at its best - however, all the white detracts from the image for me and it loses some of its power as a result - you might disagree though - great picture...
There were lots of entries with three objects but this one stood out for a number of reasons - simple but effective subject matter and in particular, the colour palette which gave me a sense of history without utilising extensive post processing. Theres something about these shovels that exude a feeling of history and human usage - I see the image as a visual prop of the viewer to consider the years of human handling and the sheer hard work inherent within them.
There were a few action shots entered into the contest and I particularly liked this one as its 'in your face' and close up - and a powerful image as a result. If theres one issue to pick up on - it is the inclusion of the partly obscured figure on the right but to be honest - I didn't notice this on my first viewing when I put it in the commended folder - and once I noticed this, it didn't alter my original feeling about the photograph.
I was amazed at the number and overall standard of the entries to this contest - there were so many images worthy of my top ten - unfortunately, those that had been entered into previous contests I discarded straight away - however, I'm sure that the crowd will reward these regardless of my own personal criteria - I was looking for imagination and creativity in this brief and this photographer has taken the effort to produce an image with a narrative that we can place our own interpretation onto. Many of the entries simply took three objects as their subject without really saying anything in the image....but for this one, the use of 3 photographs of the same person has provided a personal interaction - a discussion - an argument - a debate - a piece of theatre...in fact, the more I look at it - the more I like it...
I've no idea of what I'm looking at here - and the description by the photographer is no help to me either....however, this is the great thing about photographic images....despite all of the technical and aesthetic judgements we adopt, there are those which defy description. On first viewing, most people would say that this is a poor photograph in terms of focus, composition etc etc....but in the context of this contest, it fits the bill perfectly - theres so much wrong with it and so much right with it.....where the 3 poisons (anger, desire, ignorance) come in - I've no idea - I discounted over half of the entries because they had been previously entered in other competitions (read the brief) - this one stood out for me because of the sheer mystery and disregard for many of the formal elements we bring to bear when judging images - I can't imagine many of you out there would agree with me but the mystery of this image - I still don't know what I'm looking at - made it into my top ten.
Just a perfect composition for me - of course, the image is greatly enhanced because of the quality of the wall painting which allows the photographer to play with the juxtaposition of his live subject - which is perfectly placed to take advantage of the doorway. banging up the contrast has also resulted in a graphic quality to the image which has enabled the whole thing to be tightened up tonally. I'm afraid that I can't resist a well composed monochrome image...
I was attracted to the overall 'feel' of this image - the leading path taking the eye towards the first three windmills, the angle of the shot - a third land, two thirds sky - the overall tonal qualities and in particular, the circles made from the lens.....many photographers tend to discard images with lens flare but in this instance, it helps make the photograph for me.
I debated for ages about the inclusion of this image...there was another photograph included in the contest which showed more of this sculpture against the tower in the background - this was helpful as I'm not familiar with the sculpture - however, I've ended up commending it for its simplicity, the overall composition and the fact that I just love it.
I see a lot of images using reflections - but this one is a little different because of the viewpoint from above - which makes the overall composition very effective. I tried looking at it from different angles and it is debatable whether it would be even better presented in portrait rather than landscape format - or even upside down - whichever way around - great photograph...

Take your inspiration for this contest from the number 3. You do not have to take this literally but you should use your imagination and creativity to respond to this simple brief. The banner for this contest should not be seen as a clue...it is merely illustrative. I'm looking for images that take the number 3 as inspiration....and I am much more interested in creative responses rather than technical excellence. Finally, please enter something new and fresh rather than images that have been entered into previous contests.

Sometimes its better to not read the description of individual entries as at first viewing this image appealed to me for a number of reasons - I like photographs which have an air of mystery and obscurity....something that I can put my own interpretation onto - I love the overall texture of this image - the way subtle marks and tones appear on the surface....therefore, I have forgotten that I read the description as this image stands without the description anchoring it back into reality...
There were many entries with three objects - many very good - however, I find the choice of subject the most critical aspect here. Many of the aforementioned images had a degree of predictability but this one has something extra....its a piece of art really as it looks like the leaves have been placed on hand made paper - the placement of the leaves appeals to my sense of composition along with the differing tonal qualities inherent within them. Love it...
