I love the proportions, the curves and a wiggle. All the right parts are in focus, everything else drifts out of focus. The background has lovely curvy blurred shapes. The colour scheme of shades of blue and purple are calming to the eye.

The shallow depth of field, along with the light catching the edge of the petals work beautifully. You are drawn into the abstract depth of this flower. Inside is blurred and mysterious, and you are not sure what awaits you.

I love the softness of this image, the main focal point is still sharp, but has a dreamy soft glow. Beautiful colours that complement each other. The soft blurred arc effect of the rest of the background adds to the atmosphere of this strange landscape.

I love this image with it's shallow depth of field, and choice of black and white. For me, I would have liked just a little bit of the main ant in focus. This reminds me of old black and white films with giant ants looming at you. Great atmoshere.

This fits the brief, its macro and definitey abstract. I don't really know what I'm looking at, but it captured by attention. The muted colours work well, and the sharp straight angles draw you into the image. The small area of sharpness is just enough to see the different textures.

This is a beautiful image. In this competition, there have been many spider webs. This one stands out for me. There is a correct amount of focus on the frozen web, and the irregular shapes of ice are pleasing to the eye.. The background works so well with blur, colour and tones from light and dark.

The colours are beautiful. I like the different sizes of all the bubbles. For me, I find the bottom left of the image with the light area a little distracting, this could be changed by darkening in post production. I can also see some horizonal lines. Overall this is an engaging image, and fits the brief.

This image draws you deep into its centre. The gentle curve of five shapes taking you to the centre work well with the tones and colour. There is just enough sharpness to see small hairs which are set against the darkness beyond.

This image has an eery atmoshere. I feel as if I am entering a cave from another world. The colour adds to this effect. The light at the centre makes you want to go towards it, though you don't know what you will find when you enter.

Black and white suits this image perfectly. The tones and composition are spot on. The shallow depth of field with the tips of the fork as the only sharpness showing adds to the atmosphere. They are in contrast with the rest of the picture as this is the only texture showing.

This is such an engaging image. The colours complement each other, and are enhanced by the backlighting. There is sharpness in all the right places. The lines, textures and curves are very beautiful. I can't think of anything I would like to change.

Beautiful abstract image. The colour tones from pink, yellow and green are subtle compared to the harsh outlines of the bubbles. I feel as if I'm looking at strange footprint, as the smaller bubbles look like toes. The composition works well and the outlines of the bubbles are sharp.

The small world captured in the water droplet is beautiful. I love the sunburst coming out the tiny scene. The bokeh in the background give added shapes and interest. There have been a lot of water droplet images in this competition, this one stands out for me in it's simplicity.

This is a great choice for black and white. The tones and composition are spot on. The depth of field is enough to see the detail of the lines and swirls in the skin. I feel as if I am in the land of the giants, and the fingers are making a wall.

This is such a strong image. You get the feeling you are in outer space. That is one huge bubble. I love the way the smaller bubbles are clinging to it, and the randon bubbles throughout the rest if the image range in tone from light to dark, which give a pleasing effect.

Some macro shots can’t help but be abstract, such is the strangeness with which the macro lens can render the most familiar of subjects. Others are made so with intent, and can have the viewer scratching their head asking what they’re looking at. Getting one’s first macro lens, macro filter or extension tubes is an exciting time, and opens up a world of new possibilities. Here we’re wanting to see how you’ve uncovered or created abstract compositions from the world when you’ve shot it up-close.
