Black and White Headshots

October 2022

Should the eyes be in focus here? One could argue the tattoo is the focus... Nice composition. Decent lighting. Like the expression of the subject. I'd be tempted to photoshop the strand of hair across the nose bridge & a couple of upturned wispy hairs by the chin. Like the movement in the hair too. V nice!

I love the concept of this image!! It's a great example of why it can take a long time laying in wait with documentary/street style photography. You've got a great subject in a black outfit as the central protagonist - unfortunately not in focus - but great position in frame. The other aspect which is quite bothersome is the car - the car doesn't go with the vintage style story of this street for me & is quite distracting. Come back with some other street options please - you obviously have aptitude for this style & could do really well in the future!

Images which look simple to achieve are often the ones which take the most amount of skill. Flawless image - everything on point. Focus, expression, crop, emotion, editing & lighting. All contribute to a truly exceptional image. Super well done & congratulations - I love it!

**This contest is open to photographers ranked between 251 and 1000 in this week’s Leaderboard.** If you have an aspiring actor as a friend, there’s every chance you’ve been asked to shoot a black and white headshot. A focus on the face, stripped of colour, and presumably seen to be offering a kind of objective rendering of the person’s likeness, against which each can be judged against the other? Black and white headshots can still be bursting with creativity though. The expression, the direction of the head, and the eyes, the backdrop, the hair, there are still a lot of variables to play with, and the act of shooting someone’s headshot can be a great interaction between sitter and snapper.

Great subject, great expression! Framing could do with being a tad wider. Plus the eyes are not sharp enough probably due to the shutter being too slow esp for 120mm. Overall fantastic work, but do come back with some adjusted settings on further work - we'd love to see your progress.
